Default Please explain "Slicks"

I have a 2001 Trans Am, planning to put LSX manifold, pulley, full exhaust and a tune by May. Now I need to know what should I get for slicks. I know slicks grip way better than any street tire. car is going to be raced as soon as these mods are done, what slicks y'all recommend? will I need those skinny tires in the front? do I need new rims? please give all y'all input

Hey again,

Check out http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/strip.html

You don't need skinnies up front, but it will reduce unsprung weight, reduce rotating weight, and provide less rolling resistance, - All good. Make sure the wheels fit.

If you are going to run your "slicks" on the street, as well as the track, buy Nitto's. If you're gonna have a spare set of wheels, and just run the sticky tires at the track, I highly reccommend the M/T Radial ET Street tires. BTW, "slicks" have no tread whatsoever, and cannot legally be run on the street. A d.o.t. drag tire is what you're probably looking for: combination street and strip. Are you from Boston, Ma.? WJ

ET Streets! I lucked into an almost brand new pair for $125 from a guy who sold his car. Compared to the Nitto DR's, they dead hook, no matter what. I hit mine from a stop w/20 psi on the street, and they hooked so hard that my neck hurt!

I haven't had a chance to run them at the track yet, but I'm anticipating AT LEAST a 1.8 60". Best with the Nittos was 2.002, and that was after a ten-second burnout. Linelocks rock, BTW.

Try ET Streets in the rain. They absolutely SUCK on a wet road. Read up. Everyone knows and says the Nitto's are the best all around street-strip tire for being the best on a damp or wet road...They may not hook racing as well as the ET Street, but they aren't as apt to put you in the woods on a wet road, either. Also, I reccomended ET Street RADIALS to the lady. Read the post.... WJ

I have the MT ET street radials, and there my only set of rear tires. I love them, i know they will only last about 6k miles, but oh well, they are worth it. I went to the track for the first time the other day and knocked out a 1.6 60foot with them. And on the highway at 60mph in the rain they where fine. They got my vote.

I have the Z-28 16x8 wheels, and I'm running 26x10.5x16 Mickey Thompson ET Streets. You have the 17's, right? It'd look goofy, but you could use one of the 16" rims for a drag strip rim. I believe that the 15" 3rd gen wheels work too, I'm not sure though.

You could use the search function to find out what works and fits for sure. Just lettin' ya know what works on my car.

I was just in Alabama last week, Birmingham to be correct. I was there for a soccer game. but anyway I called the Tech line for Mickey thompson and they told I should run the 26x11.5x17's. I'm going to getthem but I want two 17x9 rims on those. I want cheap ones no more then 200

I know a guy who pulled the front tires off the ground on the street with no burnout on M/T ET drag radials. They are definately fare weather only though!
