Default Tire Size Help

Ive had Nitto 55's on my car on all 4 corners for about 20,000 miles or so and tere are wore down pretty bad. im about to order a new set and my rims are 17x8.5...I have now 275/40's and tey didnt wear evenly at all. I was wondering what the correct tire size is for that size rim. I saw some 255/40's in the same tire and was just going to check and see what is the correct size before I mssed up and got the wrong size again.

Was the tire pressure the same all the way around and did you rotate them? I believe that 275 40 17 is the correct size for an 8.5 inch rim.

I keep about 32 to 34 pounds in em cold. I was thinkin that 275/40's were more subtable for 17x9.5 rims? So I should stick with the same tire dimensions?

Where was most of the wear on the tire located at? And you may be right, they may be too wide for that type of rim.

Before I rotated them the fronts were wearing very badly on the other edges..and abviously I was putting stress on the rears from aggressive driving. Now with the roatation of the tires from fornt to back a few months ago the fronts are getting bald on the middle right side up front. What u think?

Sounds like your alignment is off. Have you checked your tierods?

No. I havent. I never got the car aligned after getting rims and tires bout a year and a half ago. Whatever size tire I get when I order in a day or two im getting alignment. Do you still think the 275/40 is too big for a 8.5 rim? or 255/40 lil small?

Just noticed your sig...my trans am looks ust like your old one except for tha rims.

I'd say get the 255 until you get a 9.5 rim. Have them check your alignment out also and show them the wear on your tires.

Those were the stock rims on the T/A by the way.

I was just wondering if the 255's were plenty big enoug and not look tiny on the rims..that may be a real stupid question.

It's either the 255 or the 275, I don't think that there is a size inbetween. And for an 8.5 inch rim, I think that the 255 would fit ok. I think that there is a sticky on this.

Yup there is, here is your info:

Front and Rear

7.0" ..... +35 to +40 mm .... 215, 225, 235
7.5" ..... +35 to +45 mm .... 215, 225, 235
8.0" ..... +38 to +55 mm .... 225, 235, 245
8.5" ..... +38 to +45 mm .... 235, 245, 255
9.0" ..... +38 to +56 mm .... 255, 265, 275
9.5" ..... +38 to +56 mm .... 255, 265, 275
10.0" ... +38 to +48 mm .... 265, 275
