Default steel wool

My polished zo6's are hurting big time, they look like ****. There is alot of road grime/brake dust that just doesnt seem to want to come off. Could I use a really fine steel wool to go over them and then polish them with a metal polish?

I'd first try an aluminum wheel cleaner. I have this stuff by eagle or mequires that you spray on, let it sit then hose off. That should get most of the grime off then just use mothers aluminum polish with a buffing wheel/ball. if that doesnt work, maybe a fine grit (1000-2000) wet/dry sand paper. and follow it up with mothers polish.

I was/do. Problem is I got stock using it as a daily driver for 6 months and could not keep up with the rims while going to school. I guess I will try to wet sand them.

000 or 0000 steel wool is fine to use on chrome if you must - but I wouldn't use it on aluminum

And if you use a spray on type wheel cleaner make DEFINITELY SURE that you are using the proper cleaner for the type finish your wheels have (i.e. polished/no clearcoat, polished w/clearcoat). Using the wrong type of cleaner on just polished rims will trash the finish.

Personally I would use good ole' fashioned elbow grease and some Wenol Aluminum Polish, or you could go with the polish and the new Mother's extended smaller buffing ball as mentioned earlier.

If you don't have a problem with spending the time to repolish the whole wheel when you done the best way to clean the wheel would be with, an aluminum brightner. Aluminum brightner is Hydrofloric acid, usually deluted to be safe for use. Castle products sells it as Wire wheel acide. Some truckstops also sell these products as well. You would spray it on and let it sit for a few seconds, and then you can scrub it or just spray it off. It will clean your aluminum right up, but be forewarned it will remove polish from your wheel, the longer it sits on there the more it takes off. It will also remove any stains that may be on them, and if they are pitted it will clean out the pits. After that is when i would wet sand and polish.

Anything that abrasive will create more work for you. I would not wet sand unless they are beyond all the normal stuff. Even if you do wet sand them, you will have to follow with a rotary tool and polish. I would try a variety of polishes with a rotary or dremel first. Start with the least abrasive items, then move to more aggressive stuff. Then of course, you will have to reverse your process.
