19's look great but dont hook for ****, my friend's Hot Cam car will tear them apart in 1st and 2nd gear but they do look ******* sweet. I personally wont go over 18's just because my budget wont allow me to be able to replace the 19" tires, they are a lot more expensive in 19" diameter, but again, they look kick ***.

Regardless, the car was beautiful.
Thanks. Those 19" HP Racing wheels just fit the car perfectly though, their metallic silver faces matched the stripes and really set that car off. I got more compliments on those wheels than any other wheel I've owned, some sets costing four times the price of those. I'd put them on another car, but 19s didn't hook very well at all. Ride quality was surprisingly very nice on them though, no complaints about that. I did the Hot Rod Power Tour long haul on those 19s in that car, it rode just fine. I also drove it from Houston to Bristol, TN for a car show and no problems there either.

I think the tire selection for 19s are limited also. Any drag radials in this size?

I think 19s LOOK great. But as far as performance and value, No thanks. No traction and 19" tires are mucho dinero. IF I HAD THE MONEY, I would have some 19" wheels for show, and some slightly smaller wheels for performance... But I dont

Not trying to hijack here but, was wondering if you can run 18x9.5 on sportlines (2'' drop). What do you all think?

Default Less Traction??

Earlier in this post a few people stated that using 19" (larger) wheels provide less traction. Can someone explain why or how? I'll guess below but correct me if I'm wrong.

This is because the need a lower profile tire, which is much firmer on the sidewall (less fles) creates less of a contact patch with the road when pressure is applied. So under acceleration or corning the down force doesn't allow the tire to squash down on the road as much, creating a bigger contact patch.

I personally know they offer less feedback before breaking loose. I ran 20"s with 25 series Michelin Pilot Sports on my BMW 850 and it was like riding on ice at times. Went back to the 18" with 35 and everything was fine with the Pilot Sports.

The effect of what a racing slick does at launch (compress on the road) happens less with the lower the profile of the tire I'm sure. I imagine that's why racing slick have so much sidewall.

On another note. I run 285/40/18 and the sidewall is rounded off more dramtically then on the 275/40/18 Pilot Sport. Michelin stated "At a certain point (size) on certain model larger tires they will "roll" the outer edge more to compensate for loss of cornering abilities. I don't like that look and will switch back to the 275's. Someone wants these they are up for sale I guess.

Default trade off

I would probably go for the looks of the 19s myself...although maybe giving up some performance.

That is exactly right. The aspect ratio (profile/series) of the tire you would put on a 19 inch rim would be extremely small. the smaller the sidewall, the stiffer the tire. The stiffer the tire, the less traction you will have when accelerating hard. Smaller sidewalls are better for handling and give much better steering response. But you would never put 19s on a car that your planning to race down the strip. I just bought rims and tires for my car. I had the stock 16x8 rims with 245-50-16 tires. They hooked just as well as my 295-35-18 tires. the 295s are obviously A LOT wider, but the sidewall is small and stiff. the 245s had a mushy sidewall, which gave decent traction.
Bottom line, 19s would probably be great for handling. Stock would be great for drag racing. (or a tire with a big sidewalll)
