ITT: Recommend me some tires.
I have a set of 17x9.5 ZR1's that I need to put a new set of tires on. I'm looking for a set that will last a while, but also give me some good traction at the drag strip. I'd prefer the tires to be as wide as possible, but I wouldn't want to go too wide and be unsafe. I'd also like to be able to rotate my tires. I'm not looking to spend more than $500 on tires. What do you all suggest?

FWIW, I have some Falkens on right now. Absolutely no traction.
Are the Sumitomo HTR series any good? I'm looking at Sumitomo HTR Z II for $96.00 a pop.

Short answer, yes. I'm a tire tech, so I've seen a lot of them, and also heard about a lot of tires. BFG really makes a top of the line product. If you need proof, look at the customer reviews for them on tirerack.

if you want to stay right around the $500-ish range, i personally recommend the Cooper Zeon 2XS tires. i'm assuming you are talking about 275/40-17's? if so, they are around $135 each, plus taxes/road hazard, etc.
i only have the 245/50-16's on my car, and they ride exceptionally well in both dry & wet, and handle really well around corners....stick like glue. i've never been to the drag strip, so i'm not sure how they'll perform there, but i don't imagine they'd be terrible or anything.
now, if you want the best street tire for dry/wet, and drag strip performance, get the GS-D3's, but you'll be paying a not-so-nice premium also.....

Check out the Avon M500 or 500M...not sure which one it is. I have heard good things about them making motorcycle tires, and the reviews look good an tirerack. I'd like to hear a review from an F-body guy.

I'm not sure if I'd like to be the guinea pig. I've heard that the BFG KDW's don't hook up well at all? Is this true?
I'm also still curious about the Sumitomos and Kuhmos.

I've read reviews from plenty of other nicely powered street cars...M3s and such. They seem like a good bargain, and Tirerack has a couple tests against other tires on their site that they fared well in. Just haven't heard from an F-body.
I can't imagine the KDWs not hooking. i had 275/40-17 G-Foce Sports that were REALLY nice, and the KDW is a notch above that.
Sumitomo and Kumho I am not a big fan of. I would certainly try the Avons over running either of those. But that's my opinion. G/L with whatever you decide.

Do you think the regular Nitto 555's would be a good choice? I know they're softer, but not as soft as DR's. Sounds like it might be a good setup for me.
