Default Removing light rust from polished lips?

Does anyone know how to remove light rust from a polished aluminum lip? I was thinking of using sand paper, but if I use too high of a grit, it would just scratch the lip all to hell. Would a professional detailing shop be able to remove the rust, or where would you recommend me taking the wheels?

I know aluminum doesn't rust, but there's rust on the lip. I was reading some posts about brake crud sticking to the wheel and rusting. How do I remove it?

if it's a non-clearcoated polished lip, i'd do like Dex says and use an S.O.S. pad (or really, really fine, non-coarse steel wool) to get the rust residue off, then get some aluminum polish and bling them back up again.

I would 1st start off with aluminum polish since its less abrasive then sand paper or a sos pad. If the polish turns black after rubbing it in then you have aluminum, if not then its something else. If it does turn black and doesn't come off you could use a high grit sandpaper and follow up with the polish again.

the aluminum polish is definitely gonna be finer than either sandpaper or an S.O.S. pad or steel wool, but at the same time, depending on how much rust/residue there is, it may not be coarse enough....or it may work, but just take too much time/elbow grease.

when i'm talking about S.O.S. pads or steel wool, i'm not talking about the scouring pads that look like chain mail armor rolled into a ball, but the really, really fine fiber type of pads....the fibers are smaller than the hairs on your head. that type of pad shouldn't scuff it up too much, and the little bit it does scuff, the polish should be able to take care of without too much trouble....especially if the area that's scuffed is kept to a minimum.

try some bug/asphalt remover... worked to get a little corrosion off of mine and I used a polishing compound to fix the rest
