I would get the 275's. 255's on a 9 inch rim look funny.

I think the 17 inch rims stock sized tires are 275/40R17. Some slide on a 285/40R17. If you purchased this Camaro used, the previous owner probably put on the 255's because they were cheaper than 275's. Go with the 275's.

I've ran 245s on 9.5" wheels. No problems, just weren't square with the rims.

But I'd just go 275s if you have a choice.

I use a 255/40/17 on the front of my car because of the offset of my wheel. It looks funny with a 275 tire
Here is some pics:

The OEM SS tire size is 275/40/17. To go to 255 with the same sidewall height, you'd need 255/43/17, but since they don't make 43 I guess 255/45/17 would be closest (don't know if they make that either). Either way the tire diameter won't be quite right.

I worked at costco in the tire department for a while. They are hardcore, if the size isn't stock they don't put it on period. There was so much stuff that you had to do so their a$$ was covered.

You need to find another place to install them. Walmart is the same way. My girlfriend had my wheels (99 Z28) on her car (01 WS6). They wouldn't mount any tire on my 16 inch wheels because the WS6 didn't come with them. Said "they won't work on this high performance WS6 car".

She had to go home and swap them over to my car and go back. Her's runs 12's.......mine runs 10's but hers was the "high performance" one.

As far as tire size...the 275's will be fine.
