Ok - thanks....

I'll take a tape measure to a few automated car washes that I frequent often.

Man, I can't believe anyone would take the time to wash their own car by hand... ..I have not done that since I was 17 and needed to save cash.....

Have fun with the swirls you're going to get. Damage? not exactly, Swirls? yes. Even if it is touchless, the guys drying it after, def aren't using microfiber, and def don't use a new rag for each car....

I'm sure there are things you like to do that I wouldn't waste time on either. It's called a hobby, and I personally enjoy spending time washing the car. I find it relaxing.

What is not relaxing for me is wondering how many new scratches will be in the paint after I go through the automatic wash.

This thread is pointless.
I dont really know what kind of answers you expected to get from this. I think its pretty obvious that 99% of the people on this forum care about there car and wouldnt go through a automated carwash. I never even took my old, beat down mazda that I had as a first car through an automatic wash. (i never really washed it at all, but still).
There are the carwashes that dont use any brushes of any kind. But they could never get a car as clean as it could be by handwashing. And god only knows what kind of chemicals are being used in those things.
As for the carwashes that pull your car through on a conveyor, beat the **** out of your paint, then dried by hand with old towels. ummm

I do know that all automatic car washes use ATLEAST a 13 inch wide guide. I managed at an express carwash all through highschool so I know a thing or two about them.

Thanks Stang.

So it would appear that a 315 tires (13 inch) would fit the average car wash then.

My car is 9 years old and I suppose it has a few swirls but I can't see them. ...the car is a non-garaged car so who cares. The FV is about $5K so why waste time with hand washing?

I do know that lowered with sportlines or something as low along with LT headers wont fit. If you have something like a pro-kit with LT headers you should be fine.

We have Miles Express around here and guy I know has a black car and washes it atleast once a week there for about 2 years and acutally the paint still looks good. I won't take my car there though.

Anyway I took my truck there after I put 325's on and it was a tight fit. The way it felt I think the side walls rubbed the whole time.

If your side walls rubbed this would not casue any damage to the tire; right?

you are kidding right? I would not run my car through a car wash. Hand wash only.

Yes it would. Get under there and do some hammering and shaving. Then take a couple above-average speed turns to make sure you aren't rubbing.

I think he means rubbing the car wash rails, not rubbing the wheelwell.

The only time I go through one is if we are traveling...and only "Touchless" car washes....99% of the time we go to a self/wand wash joint when away....think I went through 1 touchless in June...was too tired to do it myself. In the west here..I don't think there ANY of those old-fashioned washes...the ones you are talking about.

got it. That wouldn't be good for your wheel or your tire.

So, if the sidewall of the tires touch the car wash rails as it is cruzn through the scrub-a-dub-dub machine - this is a bad thing?

I thought the tire sidewalls were the strongest part of a tire.
