Default Balancing wheels

Do you folks get your wheels balanced when you get new tires?

I did, and they put the clip-on weights on the back of the rim.

Problem is they came off within 2 days of driving and now I can feel them out of balance. Scared the heck out of me as it sounded like something was broken under the car.

What can I do? Is there other types of balancing weights that won't fly off?

Have them use tape wieghts on the inside edge of the wheels and then use aluminum "aircraft" tape to make sure they stay there....you won't lose them (if you get the rims clean with brake clean). I've never had clip weights come off (even at 150 mph), I wonder if they used the wrong clip on weights for your wheels???

Not sure Kevin, I'll have to find out. When I went up to get the new tires balanced last week, the guy commented that the old ones had no weights. The funny thing is I wasn't beating on the car or going over 70mph when they came off. Educate me; why brake clean the rims before attaching the weights? Better adherence? Also, do I need them to be careful when cleaning the rims to not damage the face ( I have Fikse ).

Yup, you want them clean. Don't use tape wieghts on the front. Have them set the balancer to do "rear and center" weights. No front weights (don't want clip on's on your nice wheels). Just gently use brakecleaner and a rag on the weight locations before sticking them down....

Thanks man! Wheel is shaking and banging like a screendoor in a hurricane at high speeds right now.

Then stick them down the centerline of the rim (where indicated by the machine) and right along the outside edge....

When we do wheel balancing at Discount Tire, we use an cleaning fluid (basically brake cleaner) every time we put down a tape weight. Also we'll put the "center" tape weight right up behind the spokes of the wheel instead of the centerline to help the dynamic aspect of the balancing. I'd recommend that you watch them balance it and make sure that they clean the spot they're going to place the weight in thoroughly before they adhere the weight. Don't let them use the clip weights, they'll scratch your wheels to hell and back.

Good deal; yesterday I had Tire Kingdom do it the way Garrett explained, and all is well. No more shimmy and felt solid as a rock at 120.

Glad to hear it. I've heard all the excuses from "the wheel is bent" to "but it is balanced." If it is done the right way, no shimmy.
