That and other things. I mostly see them from broken belts and from people running their tires flat. When you run the tires flat you grind down the inside of the sidewall and it will cause that to happen after you fix the hole and air it back up.

Today, my friend said their car was making a weird vibration and was really hard to drive. We checked it out and sure enough it had some Mastercrafts on it. The front driver's side tire had a large bulge in it. It's not as bad as the ones everyone else has posted, but it's definetly noticable.

i work at a very high volume tire store, i see this stuff every day. it boggles my mind how people see those seperations and never think twice that the tire is dangerous.
A few years ago when i was a newbie i had taken a flat tire out of a customers trunk and aired it up on the center post machine......being new i didnt pay attention to the backside of the tire. A fellow worker told me to stop and look at the huge funny looking bubble growing on the bottom of the tire, as soon i leaned over to look BOOOOOM!!!!!!! the loudest bang i had ever heard. Also got bitched slapped by the tread cap. Nothing like having hundreds of steel belts cut your face and go deaf for 20 minutes or so.... fun

I didn't read through all the posts but that's typical separation. Usually happens to older tires but can happen to newer tires of less quality.
Some of that like the Toyo's a few posts down from the original looks like an impact break. Cause by hitting a pothole or something and causing air to get inside the sidewall, thus a pocket.
I worked for Discount Tire for 3 years and saw that stuff daily. Nothing really wierd there.
Tires get defects just like anything else made by a machine. Some of it just isn't caught during the inspection before the tires get sold, and some defects take a few miles to show.
Alot of the issues are the consumers not paying attention to air pressure, punctures, date, etc.
A nail in a tire can puncture a belt but not go all the way through. Air gets trapped inside and causes a bubble. Happens all the time.

I work at a shop and I do plenty of tires and I see this stuff all the time. I have seen one where some lady rubbed the **** out of something with the inside of her back drivers tire and than came in talking about vibrations. I got under the car and looked at it and there was prob 10 huge bulges coming from the inside sidewall of the tire.
