best snow tires?

I had Blizzak's and then changed to less expensive Dunlop Ds2's and noticed no difference at all in any weather. Last winter I put on some Winterforce tires for $60 each and they were just as good in the snow but I did notice the clean road (not in the snow) driving was more mushy than the Dunlops and Blizzacks. I run them on some 16x7" steelies.. 215/60's.

I bought my first set of Blizzacks way back in 1995 from Tirerack or Discount Tire (I can't remember) but I got all four tires pre-mounted and blanced on aluminum 16x7 1998 style Camaro rims for $600.00

A few people are right, for the price you would go through with everything its probably better to find a beater for $1000 or something. Your not thinking of the longterm effects, sandbags in back, snow tires.. which you don't want to get cheap snow tires btw, different rims so the salt doesn't hurt them, your clutch will probably be hurting more when trying to pull out in snow, and not to mention if you get stuck you would just be burning more rubber. In the long term effects its just better to buy a beater then at least you would be covered for all winters. Just look for a rusted 90s cavalier for like a grand, I say this... if the heater works and the car runs then its good enough for the winter ahaha.

guys i dont know how many times i have to say that i simply do not have enough money to buy a whole nother car and insure it right now. Im a 19 year old college student, its amazing that i own the firebird in the first place. For this season i simply dont have a choice, the firebird has to be ready if i need it for winter duty. In the future I plan to pick up a ranger or similar sized toyota pickup and that will be my beater/DD.
Another question though, what is the ideal size snow tire to run?

You take the insurance OFF the Firebird, except the fire and theft, which is cheap, and put it on the beater. THAT'S how you can afford this kind of stuff. My Z-28 is 13 years old, been paid for for 10 years, and not a speck of rust on it....because it's stored in the winter. Had I driven it in the winter, it would have rusted out a long time ago, and I would have spent MORE money buying a replacement car.
We know you're on a tight budget, but think LONG RANGE....

^ I'm in Rochester as well. If I had to recommend some snow tires I would say winterforces did pretty damn well on a volkswagon I drove this past winter. We got dumped on in december last year and I made it through snow that was higher than the front of the car.

OK, I am not going to buy another car, stop telling me to do it please, this is rediculous. I am 19 years old, my parents WILL NOT let me store one car at home while i have another car out at umass. You are all really over simplifying the matter... if i spend $1000 on some POS car im taking a huge risk on that car. I know my firebird is in good shape and it is reliable. I dont mind having to slow down for the two or three times that i actually find myself driving through snow.
Anyone who tells me to buy another car is not helping because i CANT.

You at umass amherst? Im down in springfield, MA, 45 min ill be seeing the almost the same snow as you in my firebird. Thank god for LSD, but still gonna be rough, I think im gonna go with some blizzacks (lm-25 or ws60?), also considering goodyear ultra grip

I live in the mid west and went to the Sumitomo HTR+ all seasons and they gripped like a **** in snow. The tread is deep and grips good! B4 with BFG KDWS's i couldnt get up my drive way and with these went up my driveway without spinning

You sound like a friend of mine, if you cant afford a beater then maybe you shouldn't have the car you have. My friend bought a 06 corvette BARELY afforded the monthly payments on it and then when winter came around he expected to drive it in the snow even tho I said he was a ******* moron and would not be able nor should drive that in the snow. He didn't listen and wound up cracking the whole rear of his car when me and a few friends had to pull him out of a sewer ditch.
And seriously, im 18, I own this car and another car. You should have looked into other money costs before you bought the car. I have insurance on the trans am for 6months out of the year for driving on the road, then I have liability only on my beater for winter. If I could afford it making $200 a week at a normal $8hr job I think you could but just dont want to put the effort into working. Everyone here has said the same thing, if you want to drive that in the winter It would cost much more then just snow tires but everything in the longrun on the car would be costing money. If you dont want to get a small cheap car that costs $1000 to buy and $300 for 6month insurance liability, then how the **** can you afford to drive the firebird in the winter. Idk how many people ask these questions and seriously if you cant think of these things on your own maybe you shouldn't be complaining WHEN WE GIVE YOU ADVICE that your not happy with.
