I'd assume that you would need to get them sandblasted.

Can't strip them. Chroming is a process that isn't easily reversed. I went through this with a set of ZR1's. If you're lucky you can get the rest of the chrome off by media blasting them. There's alot of talk about how sandblasting can weaken the aluminum blah blah blah, so alot of people say to use some less abrasive like walnut shells.

I sandblasted, wire brushed, and sanded the wheels and I got probably 95% of it off but it was a PITA.

I was under the impression that he was striping off the chrome itself and then polishing the metal under... hmmm now I'm interested.

They need to be BEADBLASTED. Any powdercoater will have the stuff to get the job done.. They will probably charge you $40 bucks a rim to do it.

Right! Chrome is a coating on top of the metal and you need to get it off. Paint stripper wont even phase it

so im going to take a sand blaster to my wheels this week, i still cant figure out if they were talking about stripping the chrome plating off or not but the metal under my plating that is flaking off looks really rough, im just going to blast them and paint them.... or powder coat them if its cheap. (anyone want to throw me some pricing?)

It can be. Its just going to be a pain in the butt. That is if you can even get 100% of the chrome off. After running lbs and lbs of sand through the blaster we couldn't get 100% of the chrome off mine. The little bit that was left we just feathered it out with a sander the best we could and painted them. Its hard to get the chrome out from the lug holes too.

Here are the wheels I did after stripping the chrome off and putting lots of layers of primer on before painting...
