Right.
That's the first time I've seen 6x9 and "decent" in the same question since the 1970s. You can butcher the hatch panels to make 6x9s fit but they won't fit otherwise. An oval speaker will never produce sound quality to match an equivalent round speaker. And the hatch speakers are there for rear fill - they shouldn't be a major source of sound because they will shift your sound stage too far behind you. Of course, if you like the 70's practice of mounting 6x9s in the rear parcel shelf and having all your music come from the back of the car then...yes, it can be done.
On the other hand, if you want a setup that sounds good...check with Ian at Kee Audio (a sponsor here) about his replacement/upgrade speaker sets. This is especially important if you are planning to replace speakers without rewiring because the factory system uses a unique combination of speaker types.
And please...read the Monsoon FAQ sticky at the top of the forum.

Alright, I did some reading but it just made me more confused.
I'm looking to get a crisper and fuller sound from the upgrade. Which speakers would be affordable and meet my goals?
I looked up Kee audio, and he has a special for:
4th Generation Camaro/Firebird Package:
Replaces all speakers in the vehicle.
This package includes:
CDT CL-61CV component Speaker System (doors)
Bazooka 6.5" DVC subwoofers (sail panels)
JVC CS-425 (hatch)
$277.00 SHIPPED
Good deal, bad deal? I don't know.

Good deal. The CL-61CVs are what I plan on installing in my front doors, CDT speakers get some pretty good reviews on the car audio forums. I have a 10" subwoofer so I am ditching the sail panel speakers and the hatch speakers are pretty useless unless you listen to your stereo from outside the car with the hatch open. Plus, the CDT speakers are 179.00, the Bazookas are 119.00, that is already more than the 277.00 package deal. Even if you don't use the hatch speakers you are saving money.

yep kee has great plug and play sets,,, if you wanna use reg speakers you can buy anywere youll want to rewire each speaker directly to your deck to get there full potential... the factory amp and stuff is pretty much less powerful then the one in the deck, speaker for speaker.

i myself think the stock stereo sounds very good but i replaced the front door speakers with a nice set of infinty speakers and i wired in tweeters for the triangular pieces on the door panels up by the mirror the way its all staged sounds very good clear and crisp highs and nice midbass
