Will I need a diff Alternator?

I'm experiencing some voltage flucuations as well.
I'm only running a 250watt amp, but I also have a crank underdrive pulley.
As of late my flucuations have gotten worse, and I'm thinking my alternator may be on it's last legs.
Anyway... I have ordered an alternator OVERdrive pulley to speed it up again.
I have also ordered a 1 farad capacitor.
So I'm gonna try these two things and see where I'm at.
If it's not good, well then the alternator is getting replaced.
Maybe a higher amperage one, but I don't think I really need it.
I'm a wiring n00b, can someone clarify what "the big 3" is?
My guess is battery to alternator, alternator to chassis (ground), and battery to chassis (ground). Did I guess right?
