short somewhere

edit:oh and no fuses have been tripped either
First of all, if no fuses are blowing, how do you know something is shorting out? What are the symptoms that led you to that conclusion? What electrical systems are involved (lighting, audio, locks, windows, etc.)?
With no fuses blowing, an electrical short would cause melting wire and a possible fire.

So you should check the major cables from the battery. Look for something contacting (grounding out) the starter cable or the alternator cable. Check for cuts in the insulation of the positive battery cable that might be shorting to the body. I think you will find it fairly quickly.

My car is a 02 T/A with 27k, about 3 weeks ago the wife and I took it out on a Saturday for a nice cruise. Got home and parked it in the garage like always and went on with life.
Today I go to get the car out and nothing, completely dead. I grabbed a meter and checked voltage at the battery and it was 0, didn't think about it too much and yanked the battery to put the charger on it and threw a Red Top in it. The Optima I put in had been sitting for a long time so I figured it would need a jump, when I went to jump it and put the cables on it sparks went flying. I thought I crossed up the cables but they were good so I pulled that battery thinking maybe it had a shorted cell. I then took the jumper cables from my running Cherokee to the car cables with no battery in the car and again major sparks.
After fighting with the starter and alternator on the car I got the cars cables out and my ground and hot cable (the ones going to the starter and block) were melted together. I don't know how or exactly when it happened but I will be buying new cables for the car this week.
