Default Alpine KTP-445 (Head Unit Amp) Experience?

I see that Alpine has an amp that you connect directly to their head units instead of installing like a larger amp. I know it's not powerful, but it seems like if there were a good set of components up front it would wake them up a bit more.

Has anyone used one of these?

-45 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms

-The KTP-445 Power Pack won't work in systems where an outboard factory amplifier is still active. You'll have to bypass the factory amp if you want to upgrade your power with the KTP-445

my dad needed a compact amp for his jeep but already had a nice pioneer headunit, so he decided to go this route but had me make it work. All that i had to do was cut the ends off the amp wiring and solder the new connectors on and it was ready to be tucked out of the way. Before the amp with just the H/U it sounded like crap with the top off and the radio cranked, but with the amp it its much clearer and is actually audible over 33" tires at 50mph.

If you have a Monsoon system you would be giving up power rather than gaining. The Monsoon amp produces about 240 watts RMS whereas that Alpine only totals 180.

GM rated it at 500 watts but that was ILS (If Lightning Strikes). The true figure is around 240 watts RMS into eight channels.

My mistake. For some reason I thought the sticky said that the front speakers were powered by the head unit, but it's only the tweeters.

On the pre-monsoon (pre 1997 or so) 10-speaker systems (called "premium sound"), the amp would only drive the subs and the HU ran everything else. That may be where you were getting that notion from. But on the Monsoon system, the tweeters front and back are the only thing that the HU drives directly.

Interesting. I had no idea it was anywhere near that powerful. I know it is a 2ohm system, which makes finding speakers difficult, but I pulled my amp and wiring, so I'll likely just run the power pack that the OP mentioned for my Alpine radio. Too late to revert back to the Monsoon, which seems to be more difficult than its worth
