Are there any down sides or negatives of shallow mount speakers compared to regular mount?

Well, I was looking into doing a simple but decent upgrade to my Camaro's sound system, including replacing the door panels with the Firebird panels that held the tweeters in a seperate pod. In the end, I decided it was just more work than I wanted to get into, and took take the easy way out, and just replaced the 4 speakers with Infinity Reference speakers.

For some reason, the recommendation for the Infinity speakers is the regular speakers in the door, and the shallow mounts in the sail panels. To me, they sound the same. The only down side to these speakers, in my opinion, is they could have a little more bass response. The mid and high frequencies are sharp and clear, however.

I've heard that after a period of "break-in" they'll sound a little better, but in all honesty, I don't drive the car daily, so it will take a little time to get them "broken in. With the winter coming soon, the car will be parked for a few months, so it might be next summer before they get some regular use....

So the only differences is the bass is a little better in the shallow mounts?

Well shallow can never get as much excursion, so yeah, bass response suffers. You can compensate by increasing diameter to an extent.

Actually, what I was saying is that the sound is the same, for the most part. My comments about the bass being a little lacking, was in reference to all 4 speakers. The Infinity spec sheet, in my case, says the frequency range for both the "regular depth", as well as the "shallow mounts" is the same.

Yes, I'm sure that the "stereo-heads" will jump in and say that 6-6.75" speakers won't produce really deep base, and yes, I already know that. However, there are some 6.5s that will go a little lower than these Infinitys seem to. I had a pair of Cerwin-Vega 6.5s in an S-10 4x4 I used to own, and IIRC, they produced a little more bass....not in subwoofer territory, of course, but a little lower response nonetheless.

If I wanted to, I fully understand that I could add amps, subs, etc, but in my case, it's a car, a performance car, not a rolling music appreciation room. Therefore, I'm interested in a good sounding stereo, but without all the added weight, complexity, and electrical drain that a HP sound system entails. If I want to "rock the world", my home system is more than adequate for that, plus the home system has a nice, big, overstuffed leather chair in the middle of the room, and a well stocked bar not too far away....

So regular mounts would be the better choice if I want some bass?

As long as you had the required mounting depth available, yes you might get a little more bass....however, it depends on the size of the speaker you're considering, which is something you haven't mentioned, so far.

x2... But I was thinking it may be tighter... The smaller speakers aren't meant for low bass replication, but more of a mid-fill. Subs on the other hand, yeah... No excursion means if you drop the resistance and up the power, they'll start clipping.

^ AMAZING! I'm running a set of (now Discontinued) 15-MSYNC6's components and these things sound AMAZING when you throw an amp at them! They've got to be the longest running set of speakers I've had yet! Had em in since about 06 or 07.

I'll be picking up a set of their mid-bass speakers soon, and I'll prolly run a full line of their amps too.

^ What are you looking to do? SQ or just a better setup? If you plan on doing anything serious, you'd be better off with a good set of components. Better off to keep the speakers separate.

Where is a good clean place to mount the tweeters and crossovers?
And how about these?

That'd be a little better. If you're on a budget, that will be fine. Don't mount the tweeters on the a-pillar.. Mine sounded just......... odd... got some 6LE pods coming in soon, so we'll see how that sounds. (near the a-pillar next to the side views.)

Why are components better than regular speakers? What are the benefits from them?

Components typically have a better protection system and can handle more power. The crossover is passive, but works to keep the speakers within their frequency operating ranges. And you can place the tweeters where you prefer them. That goes into phase separation, which I don't know much about.

If the woofer voice coil heats up, it will effect the tweeter. And I've actually had a woofer cone contact the base of a tweeter. You end up with this annoying snapping sound.

I tried a set of Alpine coaxials in my sails and they didn't last long at all.

Thanks bayer! Can you post a pic of where you have your tweeters mounted?
