Default Odd Bulb Out

Alright, so my 95 Bird, I'm having tail light problems. For those who don't know, there are 6 bulbs in the back (excluding the high mount and lp light), 3 to each housing. In the order, left to right, 1-2-3-4-5-6, 2 through 5 use bulb #2057. They are dual filament bulbs. One filament for the regular lights, the other for brakes, signals, and flashers. The problem is with socket 3. When I turn on my lights, it comes on fine. When I turn on my hazards or hit the brakes, the same filament lights up instead of the appropriate filament. I've tried swapping adjacent bulbs with it to the same result, so the problem isn't the bulb.

I only noticed this Saturday night so I don't know how long it's been happening for. My turn signals stopped working a few months ago so I believe the problems could be linked. Anyone experience something similar to this and/or know the fix? Good advice is appreciated.

It sounds like its a wiring issue or short circuit between the rear harness connector (just inside the hatch behind the carpet) and the socket.

I'd check first for funky corrosion or if someone has replaced the socket in the past and wired it up incorrectly.

I'm thinking it's a connection inside the socket since last night, when I got home, it was working again . I tried unplugging the rear light harness and cleaning it when I discovered the problem but that didn't rectify the issue. I may just replace all the sockets with ones that take 3157.

The socket is two piece. If you pop out the insert portion, the wires will fall out and you can test each part to isolate the short and also see if there is corrosion inside the socket.

Do tell. That may be my project for tomorrow, then. Just finished a brake fluid swap on my car and replacing the door lock relay for the alarm system.

Here's a good write up one of our members put on another site:
http://www.fullthrottlev6.com/forums...-a-single-wire

This was for the front sockets, but the rears come apart in the same manner.

Ah, yes. I stumbled across that in my earlier searching. Would there be any difference between it and a socket that takes the round bottom bulbs? Actually, never mind. I'm gonna go find out myself haha.

Yes, they are different. They moved away from the round sockets for a reason...

Well, the socket looks copacetic. In fact, it's in better condition than the adjacent socket.
