Default Help with disconnecting Monsoon head unit

I need to pull my Monsoon head unit to send it in for repair. When I went to pull it, I saw the two wiring harnesses, which appear to be straightforward (?) to remove. However, there is a thick black cable connected to the lower right corner and I see no way of removing it. I tried to gently pull it out, but it did not seem like it was going to come out. Please help!

I don't know what it's for. There are two wiring harnesses and then this black cable. How do I disconnect the black cable?

That black one should be the antenna and it should just pull out I believe. Looks like a big headphone jack (not sure what the technical term is).

And it just pulls out? Guess I will have to try harder!

I am 99% sure it just pulls out. If it's been in there for 13+ years you may have to muscle up on it but it should just pull out.

The stock antenna cable has some barbs on it that hold really tightly - so you need to pull pretty hard. Much harder than a normal radio/antenna cable.

What's wrong with your radio? Do you really need to send it out? The Monsoons have a few gremlins that are easily solved at home.

That's a little worrisome. Any suggestions?

LCD stopped working right (I can see it if I shine a light on it)
Volume control **** not working correctly, especially when lowering the volume

Just pull, you'll be alright.

It's OK. Just pull hard. You may have to give 'er a good grunt as you do it. Maybe even 'cus.

This is a burned out light bulb. Easy to change yourself with a screw driver and you can get a new one from eBay for $15-25. There are threads here instructing on how to do this.

This is caused by dirt in the volume control. If you pull the **** cap off, spray electrical contact cleaner down the shaft, and spin the ****, it will clean things out and should fix the problem. I recommend using MAF cleaner for this since it is a type of electrical contact cleaner safe for plastic.

More burned out bulbs - but these are on the circuit board behind the buttons. This is a little harder and require soldering to replace. Is this something you can do? We have threads on this, also.

^ If you want to send the radio out, you can get the bulbs taken care of, but I would definitely do the volume control yourself. If you have someone "fix" it, you'll get a used part from someone else's radio and end up in a worse spot.

Yeah, I've seen some of those threads. Wasn't sure about soldering to the circuit board as I don't have much experience.

I hadn't seen about the simple bulb replacement for the LCD. I'll have to look (link?).

Does the volume **** just pull straight off?

As soldering goes, this job isn't that hard. If you have a friend who has a good hand for this, it's an easy job - worth a trade for a 6-pack. This is a really good thread on the topic and I have a post in here on the incandescent option (replacing with regular incandescents is an easier soldering job and less complex than the LED options discussed): https://ls1tech.com/forums/appearanc...hting-faq.html

My bad. We don't have a really good thread on the bulb replacement. This thread from another forum has the details. Towards, the bottom, you'll see that the bulb is AC Delco #16208443, available from numerous sources: http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/089227.html

Yep. Like the antenna wire, it may stick a little the first time, but you just pull it straight off the shaft. Once off, you can use a spray straw to direct cleaner down the **** shaft. (Inside the **** assembly are stacked plates that turn against each other and create varying electrical signals. These plates get dirty and cause the interruptions - the unit can't tell if you are turning the volume up or down. Once that dirt is off, all is good. It may take multiple cleanings.) I took one of these apart once to investigate. Each time this subject comes up, I kick myself for not taking a picture of the insides!

Make sure when you're pulling the antenna out you pull by the plug and not the wire. You can break these and it is not fun to fix.

If you can't get a grip with your hands, using needle nose pliers and levering against the radio chassis is a good way to do it
