Pi to good Use really not needed, you can already use Torque (on android) combined with one of those ELM327's bluetooth OBD II readers and have an easier setup and objectively better looking interface. don't get me wrong it's neat a Pi can be made to do this, but it's really rendered pointless with the tech we have readily available already.

I just made a post about this, then found this thread. I've been kicking the idea round too. What makes the Pi stand out from existing apps is that it is open source and the software that is used on the Pi is open as well, creating the opportunity to modify monitoring, logs, and possibly on board tuning. I think it's a great idea, just need some more folks behind it to make it happen. Subaru and BMW tuners are doing it.

You are going to need a few things to get a pi to work right and suit anyones needs.
First, minus the pi, is the power suppy these are easy to find and i think are on Amazon for cheap.
Then a powered regulated usb splitter. They are out there. I knew site that had them.
If you are going to keep a stereo system in than you need a receiver to split sound. Preferably one with a aux cord plug in. This you will need to hide somewhere unless you go with a monitor combo.
Monitor is last. It needs to be touch screen. I have no clue if a dvd receiver is out there with a hdmi port that will take touch data. Also most sacrifice being pretty for sound.
After that run everything you want though the usb splitter.
It is much easier to just get a tablet, usb splitter, and mount.
Or full on computer which what I did.
