Default no sound from driver side tweeter

Car is an 02 Trans Am convertible with the monsoon system. I decided to upgrade the speakers and I have a level 2 kit from Kee Audio. I completed the passenger door, no problems. I didnt see the foam covered filter on the tweeter wires, but the tweeter is working fine. On to the driver's door. There was the filter, inline with the wires to the tweeter. I installed the tweeter and the midrange and tested before assembly. No sound coming from the new tweeter. I verified correct polarity ( I have the wiring diagrams). So before I dig in to this, is the filter supposed to be removed? The install instructions say to leave it there but there isnt one on the passenger side. Will having only one filter cause problems down the road? So unless anyone has been thru this and can offer up some suggestions, I guess I will have to break out the dvmm tomorrow and go hunting.

You should have the inline filters to protect the tweeters from low frequency signal they're not designed to handle. However, the factory filters are known to go bad over time so it could be that no signal is getting to the affected tweeter. There's nothing special about those filters - they're just passive high pass filters that you can replace with ones from any audio shop. They're only necessary in Firebirds because the tweeters get full-range signal directly from the head unit. Camaros get their tweeter signal already filtered by the Monsoon amp.

Thanks for the response. Strange that there was only one filter installed, all wiring looked original, no butcher work. Anyway, is this what I need? One on each lead for a total of 4 or just one on each positive lead.

OK, never mind. I went out to Crutchfield website and they show how to install. Now I just need to figure out what set/ frequency range to buy.

Did some testing this morning. No signal on the + wire to the tweeter. I will reassemble as much as I can, order up some new bypass filters and then close it all up. Have to decide if I want a replacement Monsoon head unit, an upgrade or just forget about the tweeter. For now its look like forget about the tweeter. Any decent head units that will work with the steering wheel controls and the rear CD changer?

Been doing some thinking ( I know, always dangerous!). The speaker kit came with a pair of crossovers. The instructions state not to use them. If I wire them to the speakers, using only the midrange input, will this work or am I creating an issue/problem? Other option would be to put a bypass filter on the passenger side, stay with the factory wiring, and use the crossover on the drivers side.

Sorry, I must have missed the part about it being a convertible. Convertible Monsoon systems are different from coupes - they're more like Camaros than a Firebird coupe. Since a convertible has eight speakers (rather than the ten speakers in a coupe), all speakers are powered by the amp, including the tweeters. So, the right side with no filter is actually the correct one... there shouldn't be an inline filter on the left side. The filter may be the problem but it shouldn't be replaced. Just remove it and see if the tweeter works. If not, you probably have a break in the wiring between the amp and the speaker although it could be a dead tweeter (have you tried swapping with the other side?) or perhaps a bad channel in the amp (unlikely).

The head unit is not the problem so choosing between the tweeter and the HU doesn't make sense. The HU produces four channels of output which the amp splits into eight. If the HU was the problem then you would have no left front signal at all (it wouldn't be just the tweeter). But just so you know, almost every modern aftermarket head unit will work with the steering wheel controls after buying an adapter but none of them will work with the factory CD changer.

I removed the filter, still no signal. Tweeter is new and does show resistance when I meter it out. Starting to look like a broken wire (hopefully easy to find). Will get in to that today.

Working! Unplugged the amp and metered the wires, good continuity. Cleaned off some excess grease on the amp connector . Reassembled the system and tweeter now works. Loose or dirty connection at the amp? I did notice that the left door panel had been modified, probably for a large speaker. Wonder if it had been replaced somewhere along the way with a coupe door panel. That would explain the inline factory filter. Car had the original Delco speakers so modifying it shouldn't have been necessary. Have to wait and see if the problem comes back. Thanks for the help.
