Default Need a radar detector

I now have to drive a major expressway (LIE) everyday 53 miles round trip, so I need a really good radar detector. I drive my tahoe back and forth so I don't speed ridiculously, but the speed limit is 55, I drive the fast lane between 65-75 depending on how fast the lane is moving. I really don't want to get a speeding ticket for 15-20 over, so I think I'm going to invest in a radar detector. Is the Valentine 1 still the best? Any experience? Any cops here with imput?

Thanks in advance,
Ralph

Valentine 1 is what I'd go with. Know the direction of radar and the strength which once u get used to it, you can know your approaching the source of the radar target area (unless it was laser or instant on)

It's K band and laser that's used mostly in NYS.

not to dog you but that short a distance your not going to save much time by driving that much faster.you could cruise low 60s and save the money for somthing else.but if you really want a detector valantine makes a god one.

Thanks for all the responses, guys. I'll probably go with the Valentine 1.

Tony, I realize I won't save that much time, 5 or 10 minutes tops, but it will be good for when I'm in a rush. I also need it for when the Camaro is completed, as I'm sure that will be a cop magnet.

Not only that, you get to know where the radar is coming from, how far it is and what they are using (ie laser, K band, KA band, X band) and to confirm an undercover cop car is really a cop and not a wannabe who buys crown vic's and impala's, removes the hubcaps, put fake antennas, tint their windows and all that crap to pretend and goes around trying to scare idiots.

I have a V1 and an Escort 8500 X50.

The V1 will tell where the signal is coming from and how many signals.

The X50 has a better filter, IMHO. But it does not come with a direct-wire to hard wire it in. (The V1 does come with one.)

Both work great though, so you pick it.

Peace,
Craig.

Just because your radar detector doesn't react doesn't mean it's not a cop. He could be running with the radar off, using instant-on radar, or even not have radar installed in his car. He can always get you using the old "pace you with his calibrated speedometer" trick (apologies to Maxwell Smart).

I seriously doubt that there are very many of the "wannabes" you mention. Sure, some people have unmarked car look-alikes but they don't often go to the extent of adding antennas and stuff. If you see such a car it's always safer to assume it really is a cop.

True, laser and instant-on radar is too late to react once it's been used.
Yes he can try to pace you but if your aware of your surroundings at all times by checking the mirrors and watch the idiots around you, that trick isn't effective.

There have been more than a few times per year when I was driving by the local police station, they left their radar gun on in the police car parked on the side of the road (the police station is right across the street from where they park the cars).

there have been several reality tests done on the "best" detectors available. V1 doesn't detect POP, and supposedly most highway patrolmen are being issued equipment with the new POP. personally, i wouldn't invest in the most expensive detector available if it can't detect one of the most arising popular forms of radar.

back when i got mine about 4 months ago, i went with a whistler 17something. it's rated in the top 5 best detectors, but it only costs about $300 less than a V1. the whistler also has a feature that allows you to disable X band (which hardly any big-city cops use anyway). so with the X band off, there is absolutely nothing to filter. the range is slightly less than the V1 as well, but both push way beyond the "safe point" of detection, which is 1.5 miles. so the difference after that distance is mostly unimportant unless you are frequently driving 110+. i couldn't be happier with my whistler, and i definitely could not justify the extra $300 to get four arrows

Four arrows and a counter that tells you how many radars there are.

and yes, i paid $100 for my detector. thanks for being a dick about the issue

...whoa, settle down there turbo! I wasn't being a dick about anything. Seems like you are reading me wrong.

I asked how much you paid for your detector, because I had a $99 one for about 4 years.

I posted about the POP thing so that youand others would know that NOW they do have it.

Peace,
Craig.
