you do have to splice the PAC switch into the stock wires, but you wouldnt necessarily have to cut them completely; then the infared sensor (looks like a very small LED) sits anywhere on the dash or anywhere in close proximity and thats how it reads the signals from the steering wheel controls to work with your aftermarket head unit.

isn't there an adaptor that works perfectly with the f-body so that no splicing at all is necessary?

not real sure.. why are you so worried about cutting some wires? you can solder the spliced connection and it will conduct just as well as it did before and give a pretty permanent hold if you do it correctly..

oh trust me, i've done it, i just don't like to. i wired in 2 separate LOC's already (they didn't work) and then wired in an aftermarket unit. i just don't like messing with factory stuff a lot of times. but, i would rather do it than have someone else do it. chances are, they are going to be much more careless than i.

So do the controls on the steering wheel send out an infrared signal?

It stands to reason that since the controls send a signal to the stock head unit, the control line can be taken out of the connector without splicing. Might not be pinned out with the standard aftermarket connector kit, but I gotta think you could stick a pin in the right socket to get at it. Seems to me I read some instruction on that somewhere around here, or maybe another site?

Do you think the IR signals sent out by the PAC unit can be read by an IrDA connector on a computer?

I have a carputer setup and would really like to use the steering wheel controls for seek up/down. Volume already works since the carputer is jsut feeding signal into stock radio.

Anyone have pics of where the eye is mounted for the PAC? I have it all wired, just need a perfect place for the eye. Behind the cup holder is a possiblity, but if a drink is in it then it'll be no good.

With a hardtop or T-top car, I had always thought about running it back to the dome lamp where no one would ever see it.

Whichever would be easier, I would think the rear just because it would be a clearer shot to the HU, though it may be difficult to run the wire that far under the headliner. I think using the front one might not be such a clear shot.

Lemme know what happens

If I could easily run the wire, I'll do it. Actually I plan on running a 4ga for my new sub amp, so that would definitely be the time to run it! I'll keep ya posted.

I rethought it and went to look outside. I think it could actually be run fairly easily in a T-top car, its easy too pull down the headliner along the T-top area. Just use a clothes hanger to fish it back to the light.

I wonder if lengthing the eye wire will affect the eye's performance in any way? I know voltage drop happens in really long runs..
