Default ACTUAL Monsoon power?

Does anyone know what the ACTUAL power is on all channels? Not a guess or an answer that says.. not enough. I'm just curious.

Never put one on a meter but if someone knows I would also like to know. I would imagine to expect around 20-25 true watts within a reasonalbe THD in a usuable curve.

I tried the obvious to find out (google, etc) but didn't get far. This thread: https://ls1tech.com/forums/wiring-stereo-electronics/299555-removing-front-tweeters.html suggests 500w, but I'm more inclined to beleive 2muchrice. I know I'll be keeping an eye on this, just outta curiosity. Then again, I'm also curious why it matters. I mean, it's getting replaced anyway, right? FWIW, the outputs hover at about 6vdc.

500 is not the actual power. The Monsoon is marketed as a 500watt system(in some f-bodies) The 500 is most likely the PEAK numbers and not the RMS.

I am just curious is all. It is getting replaced but its one of those things I will wonder about.

An easy way to check peak would be to look at the fuse it is on. If it is 15amp fuse it could only put out 180 peak @ 12v. If I remember it is a small wire powering the amp so it is unlikely is on anything more than 20amp fuse.

If it is on a 20amp fuse all by itself on the circuit the most it could draw at 12v is 240watts. RMS is 63% of peak, which is 177watts, so that would be 44x4.

I have read in the past a monsoon amp has about 30W RMS usable power before clipping.

I am inclined to agree with 00Pewter. These are all 2ohm speakers. Very low impedence. It is probably arround 250 Watts max. Amp ratings can be tricky. You look on e-bay and you can find 2400Watt amps all day. But then you read the specs and they say 1200 into 2ohms and 600 into 4ohms. So the monsoon is probably rated at 1ohm and then actually goes into 2ohms. Now how many 2ohm speakers do you see in the aftermarket? Not many, usually 4 or 8. So now all you do is replace your monsoon speakers with aftermarket 4ohms and now you are down to 125watts max. Kinda week. I was going to replace my speakers till I found out the stockers where 2ohms. Now I think the factory ones are fine. I will just throw in an amp and subs.

I have to argue the opposite here. The stock Monsoon speakers sounded much better that the Inifinity 6002i set I bought. Someone else in another thread said the same thing. I changed my head unit to a high end Sony that I had. I swapped in one Infinity in one door and left the other door stock. The Monsoon just sound better. I was really surprised. I even tried the Infinity powered off the stock amp and straight off the head unit. The Monsoons had much more warmth.

Now, this is where I agree with you. If you put any real bass into the Monsoon speakers they crap out completely and at surprisingly low volumes. Since many people can't seemingly hear distortion, they wind up blowing speakers. I filtered the bass out of the Monsoons with my head unit and put it into a sub I added. I can now crank the stock Monsoon speakers to some serious volume without any distortion. You would be amazed, instead of sounding like a piece of cardboard flopping in the air they sound crisp and clear now.

Good aftermarket speakers have better quality and even if they don't put out a lot of bass, the coils and cone materials can handle the longer excursions of low frequency sound without sounding like crap. If you upgrade with new speakers and a new amp you will obviously get good results but the Monsoons are doing really well in my car right now.

The stock monsoons only sound better because they are running off 2 ohms whereas aftermarket 2-ways run off 4 ohms. This means that with the aftermarket speaker, you are only getting half the wattage that you are in the stock monsoon. As far as the tweeter goes, it runs off the HU and both the HU and tweeter run off 4 ohms so aftermarket speakers have good highs but the lows are not as noticeable.

Resistance of the voice coil in the speaker has nothing to do with sound quality. You will lose power by doubling your ohms making them sound not as loud as the factory speakers.

You're right. Guess I misunderstood what he was saying. Thanks for clearing that up for other readers.

...and I was using a different head unit, and I tried it through the stock amp and off the Sony H/U as well 4 Ohm into 4 Ohm. I was as surprised as anyone that the Monsoon sounded so good.
