Default sound system for $200?

i'll be willing to spend around $200 for a sound system. not really toooo expensive. i dunno one thing about speakers, amps, or anything so i need all the help i can get. 2 of my speakers are blown and i couldn't really turn the stock system up too loud so i didn't like that.

You can't really buy a set of good speakers for 200 dollars, let alone an amp, and a head unit, sub even. So you will either need to drastically bump up your budget, or deal with what you have. Most people spend about 6-800 dollars on an amp,a good head unit will run you about 4-600 dollars, a set of good speakers about 3-300 dollars....

it's possible for $200 or less if you intend to just upgrade the speakers and do it all yourself, but will be impossible if you intend to upgrade more than that.

if you intend to upgrade everything to a full aftermarket system (which is what i'd HIGHLY recommend), i'd expect to pay more in the neighborhood of around $800 - $1000, if you want to get some pretty decent stuff. the items below are just examples, but are pretty much the minimum level of components i would buy (and you may be able to find them cheaper elsewhere):

Your choice of Head unit: $150 - $300
Polk Audio Front Component Speakers: $200
MB Quart 4 Channel amp: $250
Infinity Reference 10" subwoofer: $60
Miscellaneous items (RCA cables, speaker wires, subwoofer box materials, fuseholders & fuses, power/ground wires): $100 - $125
Sound-deadening Material: $50 - $100

and that's if you do all the work yourself....expect to add another $200 - $300 to have it all installed by a shop...maybe more.

keep in mind, you can probably get cheaper components, but in my opinion, if you're gonna do it, do it right the first time......if you don't, you WILL be spending more money later on, either when something fails, or when you're not happy with the sound. spending the extra money may take longer to save up for it, but i guarantee that it will be well worth the wait to have it done right......

guess i'll just get stock speakers to replace the blown ones and spend more money on speed instead of sound

Lots of bargains can be had on ebay. My last system ijn my old car cost well over $1000. I've already bought the most expensive stuff for my f-body and i'm only up to $300 so far.

I see a lot of people recommend Polk. Are they actually any good? About 5 years ago I bought an Alpine CDA 7863 and some Polk speakers from Circuit City. I didn't buy an amp or subs or anything. They installed it in my old Bronco, and frankly I thought they sounded like crap. The stock speakers were better, but was that maybe because the Polks weren't meant to be full range? Their bass was horrid. Were they meant to be used with a sub?
