Default Installers - best stories

I was somewhere else on the inter-web and came accross something that reminded me of what installers endure from their customers. Here's mine - lets hear yours!

I had just got done installing a fairly large system for a guy, and made ABSOLUTE CERTAIN that everything worked (I was well aware that he carried a gun and wasn't afraid to use it). So, the guy comes to pick up his ride, and I demo it for him. He likes it, hands me a $20, and rides off. Two minutes later, he's back in the shop complaining how the whole left side cut out as soon as he left the parking lot. Of course, I'm freakin' out cuz there's a vein poppin outta this guys forehead he's so pissed. We go out to his car, and come to find out his big-*** sausage-fingers hit the balance control when he cranked it up, and he wasn't smart enough to realize that. I 'fixed' it for him, explained what had happened, and got offered a 'sack' for him inconveniencing me (no, I didn't take it). That was back in the day when Pioneer put the balance on the same **** as the volume.

How 'bout you guys (or gals)? Any good stories to share?

at a shop I used to install for, Had a guy come in, and buy a pair of 12" pioneer IMPP subs, and paid us $150 for a custom carpeted box. Said his setup didn't "hit too well". So, we go out back and pop the trunk lid after the guy leaves his car there with us. Guy had made a 1" thick styrofoam box that was painted pink. It was about 1.5 cubes, just the right size for the BOSS 12" that was laying in the top of it. The woofer wasn't attached to the box, gravity was holding it into the mounting hole!

Just this week I had a guy mad b/c the fuse holder I sold him didn't fix his installed amp/sub. I check the fuse first to find the plastic spacer still in there (no fuse). His (hot) girlfriend mad fun of him!

Guy mounted 2 10" MTX subs in a box that had a small 10" opeaning and there was like a 1" gap all around the spaeker. I call it custom ported.

Guy installed his own AMP wiring kit b/c he said "it is easy" and mounted the fonly fuse holder in the trunk right by the amp b/c "it is easyer to get to. Well the drilled metal scraps on the hole in the firewall cut the wire and melted the **** out of the wire. Car has hard time running and the battery post gets CRAZY hot in minutes. Car went to dealer twice still runns like ****. But the fuse in the trunk is A OK!

Aluminum foil fuses ...
remote turn on taped into the taillight wires...
Silicone and golf T's to hold in a door speaker....
Ground and Power wire ran up to battery....
Styrofoam doggy box holding the back of a radio up in a dash, and box had mayo (very little but smelled) still in it for over year....

Best installer story we had at our shop was we were putting a deck and four speakers in when my installe opened up the glove box to run some new speaker wire behind it to the door panel. When he opens it a gun falls out. He picks up the gun and goes to move it and notices the serial number is filed off. He figures the gun has to be used for some bad purpose so he finishes his install and then after he is done wipes down the gun with a rag and some mild cleaner to get his own finger prints off it. But I guess this was some kind of cheap gun and the finish started coming off the gun. My installer freaks out and ends up telling the car owner about what happened and the guy was totally cool about it.

******BEST STORY EVER******

Guy comes in for a radio in a 02' Sable. Well you have to run the harness to the brain in the trunk. We moved the carpet panel and there was a box there with a ***** in it! So we think that this guy bought the car used or is gay. He comes to get the car and my installer was like "we found something in your trunk. that you may want to see yourself" the guy was like OOOKKKK?

The bay door was open so we could see him and he goes out there and opens the trunk picks up the box, thakes out the ***** screams a little drops the box and ***** and the ground. At this point he is freaking out. that picks it up throws it in the car and drive away fast!

I told the sales guy about the guy and his *****. My sales guys says that guy was buying a radio for his daughter and see doesn't know what he is getting it.

Poor guy trys to do something nice for his little girl and finds out that!

had a customer come in with a box made for 2 15" subs, he had 12's mounted there, each sub had 2 screws holding it in place. the sub was pushed all the way to 1 side.
Had another customer come in to get fuses, used bolts in place of the blown fuses.
Had some customers sitting at a desk waiting for thier car to get done. The desk is against a wall just around a door way. 1 of the salesmen had eaten something bad the night before that gave him bad gas. Well he had 1 that had been building up due to other customers in the show room. Well finally they all left and the coast was clear. The salesman backed his *** up to the doorway and let it rip, keep in mind there were 2 customers there about 2' from his ***! It was LOUD, LONG & RANK!!! After the another salean told him what he just did, he hid the rest of the day until the customers left. Priceless!

Yeah ge have a (very hot) girl that comes in allot that we call "tong girl" B/C there is always like 4 pair of tongs in here car. One under the seat, one in the back seat, trunk, glove box,ect... and they are sexy black with writting on them.

But then you think... Why does she need to change her tong so much? Did they get dirty from a male stuff.... So I take a screw drive and move them far away before install.

Until I got to the part about them being "sexy black", I thought it was really tongs instead of thongs that you were talking about... was wondering WTF someone would have that many tongs for

I'm sure that I, like many others in the 'biz, have seen many different methods of splicing wires, including:

scotch tape
masking tape
duct tape
wire nuts
air (as in, nothing - gee, I wonder why I keep blowing fuses)

I also remember seeing a pair of 6x9's that were secured by the elastic from a couple pairs of BVD's. I didn't believe it myself until a co-worker called us all over to witness. Unfortunately, digital cameras weren't around then. Then there was the guy that was mounting a cell-phone pedestal to the transmission hump and found a wiring harness beneath the carpet with the drill-bit
