What does the VATS system do?

If anyone can tell me what the VAS system does and if anyone has a problem with it.

VATS or Passkey system is an antitheft device that will not allow the car to be started without the correct key. There is a resistor pellet in the Key. 5 volts is aplied to one side, steped down by teh resister and then sent to the decoder module. If that reading matches the preset value the car will be alowed to start. If not, the starter relay will not engauge and the fuel control will not be enabled and you will get no injector pulse.

would you ever have the VAST system removed form the pcm?? Would be nice not to have it since the key censor can be broken right>????

so what happens if you use another key by accident and cant get the car to start anymore???

there is a post with instructions how bypass it with a resistor. Search for it on ls1tech.
I bypassed mine with a resistor long before installed EfiLive. It can be turned off with EfiLive.

I would think that they have discovered this sometime within the nearly 15 years since the last post.

BTW, VATS cannot be programmed out or turned off with EFILive or any other PCM programmer. Yes, you can program the PCM to ignore the missing fuel enable signal from the BCM (that's one of the two ways VATS disables the vehicle) but you can't program the starter relay control or the SECURITY light in the instrument cluster. Those are both controlled by the BCM which is not programmable. You can physically rewire the starter relay to bypass the BCM but if you're going to do wiring anyway, why not just do a standard VATS bypass with resistors and eliminate the warning light at the same time?
