There are a few questions you need to answer first:
What kind of music do you listen to?
How loud?
How much money do you want to spend?
Do you want to purchase everything online?
Any particular brands you like? If so why?
What car? (i'm assuming 4th gen camaro or firebird/TA)
Do you want this to be a sound quality system, or simply a loud system?
Do you plan on competing with it?
Do you plan on installing it all yourself? (if so...)
Do you have a place to install it?
Do you have tools (hand tools, saws, router, drill, etc.)
Are you mechanically inclined? (if not, have a shop install your equipment)

i got jl audio components up front, coaxials in sails, for a total of about $400, both sets offa ebay. i believe the 4-channel amp is running about..$250-$350 (cant remember the p/n for it). ur gonna have to factor in the stealth boxes and wiring kits, as well, so dont forget about those. not sure about the costs for sub/amp combos.

just givin u a rough idea about the cost if u go jl audio. i know im planning on goin a full jl-setup, when all the stars n planets line up an i have money in my account

Do you want to purchase everything online? If it is necesarry
Any particular brands you like? If so why? JL audio, alpine, memphis because from what ive heard they are good quality

Do you want this to be a sound quality system, or simply a loud system? more sound quality than loud

Do you have a place to install it? yes
Do you have tools (hand tools, saws, router, drill, etc.) no
Are you mechanically inclined? (if not, have a shop install your equipment) somewhat but would rather have a shop do it
That pretty much answers your questions i hope. Have any suggestions based on those answers?

First off, I am going to recomment some equipment that others might not think is the “best” etc, etc.. but I’m trying to blend high performance and sound quality within a budget of 3K. First, speakers:

Mids and highs: ($375)

JL Audio XR653-CSi 6-1/2" 3-Way Component Speaker System

Usually I don’t recommend JL’s gear because they are expensive for what you get. However in this case, the XR653-Csi 3-way system cant be beat as far as performance versus the dollar. The tweeter can be mounted low on the a-pillar by the windshield, and the 4” midrange will have to be installed in a kick panel, either custom-made ($$) , or like these units from Q-Logic:

Kick Panels: ($150)

http://www.mainstreet-audio.com/Merc...ory_Code=KICKS

Subwoofers: ($500, call them for exact price)

2- Resonant Engineering SE 12” subwoofers http://www.reaudio.com/html/

You said you wanted a lot of bass, and there is only one way to get it, big mean bad *** subwoofers. These subs are quite wicked, yet aren’t as pricey as RE’s other offerings. These subs are on the JL W7 level, except not as pricey. A pair of these 12”s will take up about 3 cubic feet of your lower hatch well, but there are sacrifices to be made in the name of bass. I recommend a shop build you a sealed custom box in your t-top well for these puppies, and that will probably cost you around $200.

Mid/High amplifier: ($170)

JBL GTO75.2 II 75 x 2 amplifier http://www.jbl.com/car/products/prod...=US&region=USA

These solid amps will deliver approximately 75-100 watts RMS to the JL components without breaking the bank. They are slightly underrated, and look good while packing built-in crossovers, and full-range RCA pass throughs. (eliminates the need for a second set of RCA cables to the sub amp, just daisy-chain the amps)

Sub amp: ($800)

JBL BPX1100.1 Subwoofer amplifier

http://www.jbl.com/car/products/prod...=US&region=USA

Definitely a serious powerhouse, this massive amp from JBL will feed those power hungry 12”s with 1340 watts RMS. It also includes a remote sub level ****. Serious subs require serious power. (Power isn't cheap either )

Alternator: ($275)

http://www.excessiveamperage.com/

The sub amp will place serious demands on your electrical system, and you are going to need a high output alternator. The current draw on a system like this needs a H.O. alternator. Nathan over at Excessive Amperage built the high output alternator I have in my T/A. It provides 200 amps, and “cuts in” at just above idle. He runs a one-man shop, is friendly and really has the best prices. I wholeheartedly recommend getting a alternator from him.

Installation ($600-$800)

To put all this together, pick a reputable shop that has MECP certified installers, not some fly-by-night place. You will be very close to your $3K budget after factoring in installation costs which include wire (RCA, Speaker and Power (1/0 gauge), the cost of a custom box, and the labor rates for a full-day install.

As said before, other people may choose other equipment, but I feel this system will fill your needs for:

-Very loud (the JL components powered with 75-100 watts RMS will scream, and the bass may quite possibly cause you to puke in the car. J

-Sound quality (the component speakers will sound very nice with the kick-panel mounted midranges, and door mounted midbasses. The kick panels will even the pathlength differences to you ears so the sound from them arrives at the same time. The subwoofer **** will allow you to dial it down when you don’t feel like banging heads. You may have noticed the lack of speakers replacing the sail panel and hatch speakers. The reason for this is twofold- When sitting (or standing) at a concert, do you face toward the stage, or with your back to it? Then why do you need speakers behind you? You don't. A sound quality setup tries as realistically as possible to recreate a live performance. So what you want are high quality mids and highs (and midbasses in this case) in front of you.

Hope I could help you select the right equipment.

- Don't replace your sail panel subs. Take them out, fiberfill the holes.
- Are you doing the work yourself? Lots of money to be saved there with a full install like this.
- Do you just want to boom? A high dollar system should include sound deadening.

-truth
you do not need speaker in the back (not including subs), no point... that saves you money on most of these builds

here is what I think you could get by with

headunit 400 (I like kenwoods...)

component set 2-3way 400-500 (I used Diamond Audio's my last go around and they were great fo MY ear) listen to some speakers and play with the eq's while you do get ones that YOU like....

2 channel amp 200-300 (sooo many decent brands/money I couldn't begin to name a few)

sub 1 12 is plenty in these cars, JL is a good manufacturer but for the price of one 12 you could get 2 12's from a different manufacturer or even a 15 like I did.... cost 400'ish with box materials

sub amp JBL is a very good sub amp, cheap and lots of power and very durable 300-400

add maybe another 100 for cables and wires

that's about 2k, and with some creative shopping I bet you could bring the price down a lot

I spent about 1,200 on my system I had in my old car and most people though it was a 4-5k job...

Kenwood Exelon used 225
Diamond 6.1 used 250
clarion 2 channel 275
Adire Brahma 15 300
Revo 1500.1 sub amp 225 (you can't get these anymore)
then there was the wire and stuff needed to install, I knocked a 143 legal with a sealed box....
