Depends on the subs... Brand does make a difference, there are alot of cheap brands that claim 500 watts and can't handle 100 watts rms of real power. I have 2 Memphis Audio 10's and have been running them off a old school MTX 2150x amp bridged in mono at 4ohm @ 450 watts rms and they pound very hard. I have been using this amp for 7 years and last week I bought another used one off ebay for $60 shipped. As long as the gains are not turned up to keep it from clipping, this amp is great. Built like a tank too..there are the old school 2300x amps too that put out 900+, but I found that 450 watts is about the limit my stock alternator will take before I need a more amp one.

What kind of subs are they and how much airspace will they be in?

Also the saying "you get what you pay for" also applys to car audio

One of the better deals I know of for "cheap and dirty" is a 2 channel pioneer amp marketed under various names/colors as a 760-800 watt amp. They actually sell them at Wallyworld for like $100 or so.

It's a really simple amp that can put out an honest 350-400 watts RMS into 4 ohms. It is not a SQ amp. It will not impress your friends. It does not have any features or good adjustability. But it does make with the watts.

However personally, I would not go that route - I'd watch eBay and pick up a class D mono amp for the same money. In a way it pains me to suggest that Pioneer. But some people just want the simplest thing they can buy locally for cheap, and the Pioneer fits the bill. In that price range ($75-125), there is a lot of junk. The Pioneer actually makes good RMS power, which is not common in the price range when buying new.

How can you wire the speakers? That will determine if you need a 2 channel or mono amp. I prefer the oldschool Rockfords. Something like a Power 800a2 will put out 1000w of clean power all day long and can be had for $150-$200 on ebay. Something like this:

A power 1000 is even better. Oooo, how about a chrome 800a2?

Now that is a prize. Most 12's will freaking rock with about 300w, but more power is always good as long as you don't distort them. I'm running 3 of these style 500w amps in my SQ car. The bass from one 12 with only 300w will punch you in the gut!

Now if your running one of these newer long excursion drivers, they might need 1000w PER speaker to get their full potential, but I'm going to assume you have more conventional subs. Knowing the exact ones will help us out.
