Default Opinions on a new HU

Hey guys, I've been looking around for quite some time now at head units and think I finally found the one I'm going to get. Its a Panasonic CQ-C7413U The major selling point on this unit is that its capable of changing the button AND screen color. They claim some 9000+ color combinations so ALL RED to match the Trans Am interior shouldnt be a problem.

Stats can be found at this page http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs...s&displayTab=S

Is 18 watts rms 50wx4 max decent? I'm not very informed when it comes to audio electronics so any input is welcome. Opinions, criticisms, suggestions anything.

I've never been a fan of Panasonic car stuff, but if it's the one you want then get it, but as far a the power handling, it will be fine for your stock speakers, if that's what you plan to use? I always use Alpine head units, just my personal preference, I've used Panasonic, Kenwood, Pioneer, etc, and always find the Alpine to work the best and look the best

You may try it with it plugged into the factory wiring harness, if the bass is dead and it sounds off, you may want to try going directly from the head unit to the speakers with the power wires, having the stock monsoon amp in the middle can sometimes make it sound less than perfect. But I'm pretty confident if you want it to sound real good you will need a sub if you don't have one.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, yea I have had good luck with Pioneer in the past and looked to them first but as far as looks go they didnt have anything that lit up in the color I was looking for. Call me whatever you want but I really like the red theme the Trans Ams come with for interior lighting and I'd like to stick to it.

Should have mentioned it earlier but I already have a sub in the back. 12 inch 2000 watt powered by an 800 watt amp. With that in mind, do you think that getting a harness to plug the radio straight into the car's harness will produce a good sound?

I had a 2 older model Panasonic decks. To me they werent that great. The slightest bump after a couple of months and they would skip. I'm with Orange Peel, I would look at other decks. I'm a big Pioneer fan. I know alot of people that had good luck with Alpine and Clarion as well. I wouldn't buy a deck just because of the colors. Every Pioneer I've had the last few years, I could pretty much punch the dash and it wouldn't skip.

Worse case scenerio you could swap the bulbs in you car to a different color. If it bothered you that much. I do like the red Ta lights as well though. I just didn't want to get a deck simply to get red lighting. I think a deck decides about 98% on how your system sounds, you can make swap meet speakers sound decent with a good head unit.

Well, thats why I'm asking. I do like the red lighting but if the units not good quality then I'm going to stick with the monsoon. The cd skipping thing doesnt bother much because I'm going to be ditching the cd's for the Ipod adapter. Much more convenient than shuffling through cds everyday.

Changing the dash lights is not an options. The red looks way better than any blue or green would in my opinion. I had considered ripping apart the HU to change the lighting in that but based on my previous led work that wouldnt be a great idea, plus the lcd would still be blue or whatever color it came in.

If your going to go with an I-pod then I think that that Panasonic would be good. It has 5 volt pre outs as well. Which is better than most. I liked the 2 different Panasonics I had. The only reason I ditched them was because of the skipping. I had like a 600 model and went up to a 800 model hoping it woulldn't skip. It didn't happen. So I went back to Pionneer.

I just installed an Eclipse CD5000 in my SS, great reciever. Does everything that the Panasonic does except better. Look at the CD3000, CD4000, CD5000 and CD7000 to see wich one fits your budget. You won't be disapointed.

I was looking at a few of those and got a little confused by their web page layout. Do all of those models have the capability to change lighting colors? Most of the eclipse units are way out of my price range and the ones that are in my range, to be honest dont look that great.

*edit* hmm looking at the Clarion stuff, now I'm not even sure if I'd consider ANY clarion units. I looked up the ipod adapter for them and it states that you cant browse the ipod by artist/album names. It only recognizes 5 playlists which it renames. Treats them as 6 cd's in a changer. First "cd" will play through all of the songs you have in the order that they were burned onto the ipod. and the other 5 "cds" are your first 5 playlists on the ipod. Kinda lame. I honestly didnt think shopping for a stereo head unit would be this tough.
