Default Anyone have drive+play??

I was at super autobacs the other day with my gf getting oil and she was looking for something to hook her ipod up into her car, she jsut wanted something to trasmit like over the radio but i hate cd's and have two ipods full of music so I've always wanted to have i like hardwired into my car and then i saw the Harman Kardon Drive+Play thing, and wondered if anyone has put this in their car on here. It looks fairly simple and straight forward and i was thinkging i could just hook it up to the AUX of my headunit... anyone have an experiance with this??

o btw i have an 02 SS with the Monsoon system.... thanks in advance for any help

As long as it doesn't use fm modulation then you'll be happy I think. Is it the harmin-kardon drive and play? I think that get's hard-wired, doesn't it? I've seen it installed and it's very simple to use.

Seems like a nice unit but its kinda pricey and it looks like you still need an adapter from the rca cables to the stock radio. Main unit looks to be $200 and if you go with their hard wire through the antennae its an additional $30

If you dont care about the display screen and dont mind thumbing through your Ipod to control tracks in the car then I'd just save the cash and go with a wired fm modulator. Of course if you can wire it to the aux input harness you might be able to get better quality sound. Otherwise for that price I'd just get a new headunit and the proprietary ipod connector for that. Might cost a little more but IMO you get more out of it that way.

Superautobacs is a crazy place.. did you see the red T/A in the parking lot? the one with the GT wing, gay racing seats, horrible wheels, APC everything ever made on the car??

a guy that works there drives it.. just awful.

anyways back to the topic.. my friend uses his Ipod and has this little device that broadcasts it through the stock speakers.. plugs right into your Cig lighter, you have to be on a certain FM channel.. like 88.9 or something. works great, sounds awesome

...tehy are FM modulated.
They can either be FM modulated or hard wired.

SS4Luck,
I've been seriously considering getting one these. I haven't seen them in any stores, only online, so I can't get the measurements I'd like.

If you do get one, could you do me a favor? Could you see if the controller **** piece is small enough to fit in the console cupholder? If it does fit, how high does it stick above the console? Thanks a lot!

EVEN if they are "hardwired, they go through the fm. When they are hardwired, they turn on with ignition, and they have a tuner box that goes inline through the antenna...... same thing, you wont see an improvement on sound quality either way.

From Harmon Kardon's website,
http://www.harmankardon.com/drive-1/...n_options.aspx
they list three installation options, Wireless FM transmitter, Wired FM transmitter and 3.5mm Audio Line output. Their installation diagram,
www.harmankardon.com/drive-1/diagram.aspx
also shows the option of having the Audio Line output splitting into RCA channels. This would seem to give you a method of achieving nice sound quality.

But, I'm just relying on what the manufacturer says. As I said, I haven't seen any in stores around here, so this information could be wrong.

just wire the IPOD direct .. it will sound much better .. if you have a Monsoon head unit .. you can use the PIE GM9-AUX.. if you have an after market head unit, then hook it up to your Aux input on your existing head unit ..

I am running a PIE GM9-AUX and a Soundgate AUX3, which allows me to toggle between my sirius sporster replay, my ipod and one additional input .. works great, and sound quality is awesome. I spent like $140 total, and the install took less than two hours, and I am old, fat and slow.

just buy a head unit compatable with the ipod. pioneer deh 7700mp accepts the adapter for the ipod. it runs 250 from walmart. usually 300 or more at regular audio shops. and it looks better than the stock monsoon.

IMO if you're going on the PIE GM9-AUX route, save yourself the cash and look into the aux-pod on ebay. Personally I want the ipod to plug in using the jack on the bottom so I can mount it nicely in the car (ashtray perhaps). To do that you'd have to buy another adapter for the PIE GM9-AUX converting the ipod to rca's. The aux pod connects much in the same way and costs about 100-120 but gives you the added feature of being able to control the ipod using stereo/steering wheel controls. This is what I was considering before I found a HU I liked.

To me this is the way to go:
a box by USA Spec model pa11-gm45
just search google for pa11-gm45 and you will be impressed for 100 bucks trust me I know this is what I will get after my last few kits, it really isn't worth the eye sore of all the gear it takes to put in an iPod but this will suit me just fine and it sounds GREAT!
