Default Halogen Backup Light/Lamp?

I was at Pep Boys today and saw 55W Halogen lights based to fit in the Backup light housing (they had a couple others too). They are advertised as direct replacement for 1156. I like the idea of brighter reverse lights (mine are dim especially with blackouts). I rented a Ford 500 recently and it had bright backup lights.

My questions are:
* Can our stock wiring harnes handle a 55w Halogen bulb in the backup light?
* Will it melt the plastic housing?

The stock harness will handle the bulb without a problem. The circuit is 16 gauge wire and has nothing else running on it. As far as heat goes, it depends. Those bulbs would generate too much heat for the housing if they were left on for any length of time but you normally use backup lights for only a short time so it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks.
I figured that it would be alright, but I thought I'd ask.
