Default need advice on highs

I have a 98 Trans Am and the audio sounds terrible! I really dont want to go with subs and a box and an amp and all of that. I have a pretty nice Alpine head unit right now, but just crappy speakers. So what I am looking for is some advice on what highs to buy. I have 6 spots for them it looks like; two in the front drivers doors ( not sure what size these speakers are though), then two more on both sides of the rear seats, and then two more, which are larger, i think 6"x9" in the back hatch. I just want something that is clear and will not get distorted and nasty sounding and will have a little bass. I was in a car the other day that had highs only, and it still had a good beat to it. That's what I'm looking for though, any help would be appreciated! thanks!

No, the doors and sail panels are 6.5S (6.5" oversize or 6.75") and the hatch speakers are 4". The reason the grilles are so big in the back is because Firebirds have a 4" mid and a separate tweeter mounted there. Firebirds also have separate tweeters in the doors. The complete list of speaker sizes by model is here.

^^^he's correct. but honestly, if you replace the door and rear with speakers, you won't need the sail panels. At least I don't think you'll ever hear them.

IMO, I would get a nice 6.5 component set for the front, and a pair of 6.5's for the backseat area, along with an amp to power them. I would just disconnect the 4 inch sail panel speakers in the hatch area. You could put 6x9's in the sail panels, but you would have to alter the panels, in order for them to fit nicley. I would just bypass those IMO, but its yor car so do what you wanna.

I agree w/ CamaroSS615. The problem that every F-body owner has to fight if they are interested in a nice stereo is their soundstage. As it is all of your sound seems like it is coming from the back of the car anyway. I cant even tell you how many stereos I have put in F-bodys, and every single one of them has bit the big one when it comes to SQ if they didn't do an external amp for their interiors and component speakers in the front. Buck up and buy a nice set of component speakers for the front and a nice set of 2-way 6 1/2's for the back seat. Bypass the Monsoon(assuming that you have it to begin w/), get rid of the 4" speakers and tweets in the hatch and get a decent 4-channel amp. Run past some local audio shops and talk to them. Give them a budget that you are working w/ and they will do their best to set you up with some decent equipment.
