?s on install {85 LX Coupe} long
Hey folks, I'm looking for opinions on a few ideas I have.
My 1st idea is to use two 8 inch JL Audio IB4 subs {these are free-air subs}. I will build a new rear deck tray{package tray} with either 1/4 or 1/2 inch MDF. I will do my best to seal the rear deck to help with rattles and I will do my best to seal the trunk area from the passenger area. In other words do my best to install these correctly. What are y'alls ideas on free-air subs? These sure would make things easy on me.
2nd idea- Build a new rear deck for two 6-6.5 inch subs. The subs I have in mind are either JL Audio 6W0s or Rockford Fosgate 6.5s, both of these are for sealed applications.
There are two 6X6 square holes in the rear deck sub-structure. Though these two holes, I can build the "box" for the subs. Basically I will have a rear deck with two 5.5X5.5X6inch boxes attached to the bottom of the deck. On the top of the deck I will attach a 3/4 inch spacer/ring, then attach another layer of either 1/4 or 1/2 inch MDF on that. This will serve two purposes. 1st it will give me a little more clearence for the subs and the middle ring will be hollow allowing both boxes to share air-space.
What are your opinions on the little 6.5s? I know they will be hard pressed to go below 40 or so hz. I also know they are not going to be loud. I would be happy if either the free-air setup or the sealed 6.5s would be as loud or a little louder than my Monsoon system in my Firebird. I do care about sound quality though, are the free-airs gonna sound OK? BTW, either setup will have about 200 watts RMS to them{100 watts per sub}
I know this post is long and sounds somewhat "newbie" but I don't really want to do the obvious and sling a box in the trunk. I've heard boxes in the trunks of coups before and the bass sounded muddled and weak even though they rattled the crap out of everything. I've always prefered sealed subs over ported for the most part. Also, I'm not looking for major "bump" out of either of these ideas-just good sound.
