I'm not sure about a 72 but most older cars had their front (or only) speakers in the dash pointing up towards the windshield. If the car didn't come with stereo then there may only be a single speaker in the center of the dash.

Back then I was into Mustangs but we always cut a hole in the door panels to mount speakers in the front.

My 79Z only has 2 6x9's in the rear. I've seen some guys cut holes in their doors for 6 1/2 inchers, but man, that's cheesy. I think the front center was something like a 4x10, but good luck at getting it out... think you'd have to yank the dash to get at it.

I haven't thought about how I'd approach new speakers... it's been so long since I stripped a second gen, I don't remember how much room is available under that dash panel. Not much, I'm afraid.

yea the prob with a 72, is that their aint much room in the doors to put a speaker there. I think ill end up going to a custom shop and see if they can do any thing. I want to atleast get two speakers up front and still have the 2 6x9s in the rear. maybe they can mount small ones in the front kick panels or something. thanks for help!

Hey, back then we didn't know the cars would become classics - they were just $2500 small cars with V8s and we wanted sound.

LOL and then there's guys like me that had to hunt down a pair of rust-free door frames, looking for good ones that didn't have holes in them that looked as if they were chewed open by beavers...

I wonder if a restoration might be more realistic if it had speakers cut into the doors, surface mount speakers sitting on the parcel shelf, and an 8-track player mounted under the dash? That's what we all had back then.

Kinda makes you feel nostalgic...
