The Monsoon head unit is just an ordinary Delco radio - it's the amp and speakers that make it a Monsoon system. So yes, you can hook up a different amp with speaker-level inputs. Just bear in mind that the factory speakers are not great quality and several are 2-ohm rather than the more common 4-ohm so your amp will have to be 2-ohm stable.

You're not going to gain much by replacing the OEM amp - the amp is probably the best part of the whole Monsoon system. The head unit produces quite a bit of distortion and the speakers are prone to blowing.

It sounds like you have a Monsoon system - check your door sticker for a UZ7 option code. Early Monsoon systems didn't have the "Monsoon" label on the head unit but if you have an amp then it's probably a Monsoon system.

Now, if you have the original 97 single CD head unit then you won't be able to use the CD changer. In 97, only cassette head units came with changer controls. It wasn't until late in the 99 model year that the CD head units got the capability to control a changer.
