Does the 9856 come with the double line display like the 9857??

I was reading the list of the Alpine units that can use the SWI-ALP.. didnt see the 9857.. that stinks if the case.. I thought you would be able to use the adapter for the 9857. I dont want to use the IR module.

Nevermind, I am good. http://www.pac-audio.com/products/pr...el%20Interface You can use the SWI-ALP for the 9857.

BTW, the only Alpine Models that will be able to use the SWI-ALP are: CDA-D853, CDA-D855, CDA-D857, CDA-9851, CDA-9853, CDA-9855, DVA-9865 and DVA-9860
Not true. The CDA-9857 works with it too. I know, I have one

Well, the CDA-9857 should have been included in the list of Alpine HU that will allow the use of the SWI-ALP. Still, the CDA-9856 does not allow the use of this adapter.

6.5" subs are not going to be very good. There is just not enough surface area to get you the deep, clean bass. You need size for that. I would say a minimum of 10" driver. Also, The position of the sails is closer to your ears than the door speakers which makes it very difficult to get the balance right. Either your drowning in sloppy bass or you have none. I say go with the stealth sub box and a nice 10" driver and use some decent 6.5" drivers in the sails. Don't even bother with the hatch speakers. They are too far back to offer anything. Just my opinion...

Oh and if you do put full range speakers in the sail panels don't power them from the sail panel connectors. The amp assures that only bass gets to those speakers. To leave the factory system and wiring pull the hatch speaker leads back to the sail speakers and use those to drive full range speakers.

My plan is to replace the front and sail panel speakers with some nice full range speakers. Letting my headunit power those 4 speakers. Then getting the stealth box with one 10'' JL 10W1, and power the sub with a Class D mono amp, nothing crazy. Like a 200 watt or something.

I have the same HU in the camaro. It is decent, but Alpine seems to be going the cheaper route now. They had a bunch of trouble with the motorized faces, but this new flip down design is almost better in the way that it one less thing to break down the road. I have always have Alpine HUs and will never change. Have a 9855 in the other car.

BTW, i got the 9856 on ebay for like 150 shipped new. If you're not scared of eBay, I'd go for one there and save. Or look at some of the 2005/03 used ones on ebay and find some good deals.

Also remember the 9833/35 series have a stronger internal amp, so running of speakers directly of of the HU, go for the 983x series. Also the 9835 has a 4V rca output and the new 9857 is only a 2V output model.

I just installed basically the same thing you are talking about. For the record I am very pleased...just finished the install tonight. The sound is awesome, and no distortion when cranked up and the bass is kickin'. I don't think I could be more pleased and my iPod sounds awesome and I love that you can see the song/artist that is playing.

Here is the link... my system parts

I installed
4 JL Audio 650 coax
1 MTX stealth box
1 220 JL Audio amp to run the sub
and the Alp 9856 running the 4 JL speakers
Got the Pac Swi for steeringwheel controls...not a good buy, could not use it. Selling it now.
All purchased on Ebay for $499 +- a few dollars

So would the SWI-ALP or the SWI-X be needed for steering wheel interface with my 99 trans am and my alpine CDA-9815 head unit? It seems like there was only one wire on the HU harness for steering wheel controls. What is the difference in wiring besides the hardwire/infrared thing?

And if I do need the SWI-X where do most people mount the little eye thing that sends IR to the HU?

True for 2006, but I just purchased the CDA-9887 and there are 4 different illuminations: Red, Blue, Amber, and Green.
You can also get Red and Blue on the CDA-9885.

I have never bought anything BUT alpine HUs.....they have way more options than any other HU that I have ever played with...

That being said, I have never bought a crappy alpine!

Since having mine for about a year now the only thing I do not like about my 9857 is it has no cross over. It has sub out jacks so you would think it has a cross over but it does not. Nothing in the manual mentions a cross over even though they talk about centering frequencies. Now I must rewire my entire system (a sizeable job considering my install). I finally called Alpine and they confirmed that the 9857 does not have a cross over in it. Now to do it right I need to rip half my system apart. This just pisses me off.

I guess it does not matter if the HU has a crossover IF I knew before I wired it. I wired mine thinking the cross over was in the HU so I sent 3 sets of interconnects to the rear. One set for the 2 subs and 2 sets for the fronts and rears. Since this is not the case I need to rewire which is no easy feat with my setup. To be done right I have to pull the amp rack out which entails removing the amps and all the wiring from the rack. Probably 4-6 hours of work that I could have avoided if the manual was not so decieving.

It works as is just using the low pass filter on the sub amps and the high pass on the main driver amp but it's not the correct way to wire it. To be correct the front and rear interconnects should go to each of the sub amps and then from the sub amps I should run to the main driver amp. Then the crossover in the subamps' would only direct low's to the subs and evrything else to the main amps.

what would make you think that? The signal sent from the pre amps is not an audible sinal. It just feeds the amps and the amps crossovers take the job from there. You should be running the sub out put to the first sub amp and then using the sub amp outputs to run to the inputs of the 2nd sub amp. Keep the front and rear outputs for the full range amp(s)
