Default Monsoon HU Question

So my car is a '00, and originally came with the Monsoon system but with only a tape player. When I bought the car I put in a Pioneer HU but it's started to fritz out on me so I'm looking to replace it. I want to go back to a stock Monsoon HU with a cd player so I'm looking to pick one up used. With buying one used off of here, do I need to look for a specific year at all? Do I need to get a different W/H with the new HU since my existing one didn't have a CD player? Thanks.

No, any head unit will work.

However if you have a factory CD changer you'll want to get a 2000 or later unit. Pre 2000 cd radios won't run the changer.

I'd still recommend going aftermarket, if not for anything else than just MP3 capability or cleaner aux input.

Yeah, I only listen to regular CD's and the radio in my car, I never burn MP3's onto my cd's. I also want to clean up the interior a little bit, I like the clean stock look as compared to my HU which just looks out of place to me. And I don't think there would be much quality difference between a used Monsoon HU for $100 and a new aftermarket one for $100, if I ponied up more money it'd be better quality but I don't really want to do that at this time.

The difference between a stock head unit and an aftermarket one can be huge. I personally find the adjustability of the aftermarket ones a huge plus and have never kept the original player in any of my cars. There are a lot of good players on ebay that are being sold for about $100.

The sound quality is major between the stock POS HU and a decent aftermarket HU. If an aftermarket HU is installed correctly, the dask will look clean. If you find one that matches the illumination at night, that will be nice benefit.

Yeah, the problem was partly that the display on this aftermarket one was bluish, so it didn't match the interior at all. It also developed a stupid habit of inverting it's colors every 20 seconds or so. Meaning it's normally mainly black with blue lettering but it'll randomly invert colors to be solid blue with black lettering. Very annoying.

Inverting the colors every 10 seconds is a Pioneer thing. I own one. Just push the 5 and/or 6 button to take it out of reverse mode and demo mode while the unit is off. If you don't like blue there are plenty of red display aftermarket head units.

I understand the desire for a clean stock look. But sound quality does suffer rather substantially, because the amp in the monsoon head units puts out a good healthy bit of distortion.

~$100 head units can be had quite often, and any one from a reputable brand will be heads and shoulders above the monsoon deck. Even Crutchfield often has "special buys" or closeouts at that price range.
