Default Help!!!!

About 3 days ago I was listening to my radio and it just went out. I turned off the radio for about 15 minutes and it came back on when I turned it on. Then yesterday it cut out again and did the same thing and it came back. This morning it went out and won't come back now.

My system consists of two amps (one powering the speakers and one for the sub). I am lost and trying to find out what the problem could be? Could it be a bad amp? If it is a bad amp wouldn't my sub amp still be working? Or would that cut the sub amp off also?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I bet one of the speaker wires from the stereo is grounding out. When tinkering with a stereo of mine before, when the speaker wire grounds out the deck shuts off just like that. Safety feature.

If not that, I'd say a bad power wire, or ground wire. Broken, loose, or grounding out (power wire)

Thats my $.02

An update: On the way home from work it came back on. Then when I went out to dinner it was off again but I noticed there were not lights on the amps? Could it be them not getting power? Like the remote wire problem?

Well if the deck isn't getting power, the amps won't be getting the power signal from the remote wire, and they won't even bother turning on. I had a problem with an amp where the remote wire wouldn't turn on the amp, so I ran the amp's remote wire to a key-on power source. So the amp still turned on when I had the vehicle on (since I generally always had the radio on anyways) and off when I shut it off.

If it's a short in the stereo, it'll turn off and thus still no signal to the amp. If it's the amp shorting, then it could be backfeeding into the deck, in which the deck would probably still shut off

I'm no audio guy, but I've just had experience with speaker wires shorting and killing the radio. Not permadeath, but just as you described.

Well the deck stays on. I put a volt meter on the amps this morning and got 12V but of course everything was working this morning. Sound like a bad remote wire or power wire?

If you disconnect the remote wire at the amps, do you get +12V from the wire when the deck is turned on? if not, it may be that you shot a screw through the remote wire when re-installing the interior. If you don't have +12v on the remote wire at the amps, disconnect the remote wire from the deck and check if your remote is working directly from the back of the deck. if it is, your wire is shorting to ground on the body of the car. Check your remote wire. If you are not getting +12v directly from the back of the deck with the remote wire disconnected, the problem may be in the deck.
The only other problem that may be occuring is that your amps require more current through the remote wire to turn on than your deck can supply. This is all dependant on your brand and model of your deck and amps. If this is occuring, you will need to wire in a SPDT relay to turn on the amps from a +12V wire from your battery using the remote to switch the relay on/off.

Wow Snootch thanks for the reply. I think since I have had the system in the car for 2 years now perfectly and this is now happening that basically rules out the remote wire having a screw in it and the deck not being able to supply enough current. Does that sound about right on my thinking?

Well, you may have grazed the wire with a screw, and over time the hole put in the wire's insulation got bigger due to vibration, and the wire is contacting metal. That would explain the intermittent operation.

Update: I think I found the culprit. I checked the fuse today in the engine bay and sure enough when I took the cover off one of the screws holding down the fuse popped right offf, so my guess would be that is the problem.

yeah- that would probably do it. I thought it might be a turn-on problem but sometimes the simplest things are the culprit. Glad to see you fixed it.
