Yes, many of us have installed remote starts at one time or another. How difficult you find it depends on your level of experience with car electrical systems. It's more difficult than installing a new radio but it's less difficult than rewiring for an engine swap. I would say it's about the same as installing an aftermarket alarm system. If you have a good understanding of wiring, know how to read a schematic, and understand how relays work you shouldn't have any trouble. I have found that the DEI systems have the most complete and easy-to-follow installation instructions.

You will have to bypass the VATS system using either a prepackaged kit or by determining and installing the correct resistor yourself. If you have an M6 you will also have to bypass the clutch switch (and hook up to the parking brake switch for safety).

There are numerous threads covering various aspects of remote starters. Use the search function when you need specific questions answered and I'm sure you'll find lots of help.

That's good - I thought you might have. I meant that there are answers to specific questions (like which wire goes to the starter relay, etc.) that can be helpful as you get into the installation.

I woiuld highly suggest you pay someone to do a remote starter. I work at a place that does about 1000 of them a year and we still cringe at the word "Camaro" or "Firebird". If you want to keep the factory aloarm, and use a new remote its just crazy the amount of work it will take, it shouldnt be too hard if you just want a stand alone separate remote starter, but its still a royal pain in the ***.

Good luck though

yeah if you have never installed and alarm or remote start DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS its 5 wire doorlocks (reverse polarity), bypasing the vats, and clutch switch not to mention a normal alarm/keyless/remote start install for someone who hasnt done one in my opninion is a bad choice.....i have done a bunch and camaros/firebirds are soem of the worst. not bad for me since i have done a bunch but i would much rather do a chevy truck seriosuly though if you havnt done one get someone to do it for you.....or if you need a 5 wire diagram i can tell you how to do it

I had never done this before, and basically know computers, but not car wires and such.

It took me THREE days to get it running......and it never ended up doing it right...

Sometimes it would hold the start too long, I tried adjusting settings as per user manual said to, did not make a difference.

Most times it would just kick the starter over and not start.

ONCE in a blue moon it would work right.

I ended up just ripping the box out and now I have all these wires down there that i dont need (but are all cut and taped).......

If I could do it ALL over again, I would have it done by someone else.......however I DID GET THE DOOR LOCKS WORKING CORRECTLY!!! that's what I spent two days doing, ******* pain in the ***!

Whoa. I guess I'm an undiscovered wiring genius then. I had never touched wires, not even in wiring a stereo; nor had I ever used a volt-meter, but none the less, I had it installed in about 12 hours total. I had the remote start function working in about 2 hours, then I took a break and did research to figure out the Vats dillema, and 30 minutes later it'd start without a key at all. After about a week, I got tired of carrying two remotes and I finished the wiring for the rest, factory alarm and all. Now the dillema is that my new car is a M6, and I don't trust my neutral instincts enough to risk it.
