Default Confusing issue where my stock head unit reverts to fm radio from Aux input

Here's the deal. I have a gm9-aux adapter connected to a sound card which is connected to my laptop.

The important part here is that I'm using the aux input. Occasionally when I turn the car on the stock head unit reverts back to the FM radio. This is horribly frustrating as I have to take the radio bezel off and reach back in behind my dash and press the AUX button manually.

All the stock power and ground wires are still in tact... I'm lost as where to even go from here. I'll try just about anything! This is really annoying!

This happened to me often recently until I replaced my battery. It seemed to be an early warning system since it became quite evident that the battery could no longer hold much of a charge when just having the parking lights on (no headlights or fog lights) for a few minutes without the engine running would drain it enough for the engine not to start. No starter turn either. Just clicking. I'd say, buy a new battery. I dont know if you are experiencing the same problem, but a new battery fixed it for me.

I think you're right. I should have put the two together but I noticed when I was testing my system out that the battery would drain down extremely quickly. Not so fast that the car wouldn't stop but it would drain sooner than I would expect it to.

So just to be extra sure, you haven't had the problem since a new battery?

Also, any recommendations on a new battery?

The AUX input issue happened again and its not the battery this time. Maybe its the cold weather we've been having. I don't know. Im going to look into an aftermarket headunit.

Yeah, my cars been sitting all winter and I haven't really had the chance to mess with it yet. I'm planning on putting my head unit where my ac controls are now and just moving the ac controls to the glove box. Or maybe pay one of these guys to make me a cable that'll reach to my center console .

If it was the cold though, I'm still at a loss for which part of the system is being affected. Thanks for that tip though.

Why are you moving the headunit?

Having the after market head unit in reach would be handy for a number of things, switching between aux and fm/am, playing a cd if I ever wanted to, and adjusting the volume. Of course I could just extend the faceplate and leave the ac alone.

Sorry for confusing you. Right now I have my the stock head unit and a GM9-AUX to provide an AUX input. --- Replacing these items with an after market head unit will function in a similar way. I'll have my aux inputs and the extra benefit of being smaller. This will allow it to fit into the space where the ac controls currently are (hopefully). So the stock head unit will be replaced with nothing, it wouldn't be needed.

I'm with VIP1 - why wouldn't you just install your aftermarket head unit in place of the factory one? There would be no need to move the HVAC controls.

There is a 7" touchscreen there right now. Bah, I didn't mention that in the original post.

Well.... lets just say it's hard to get to the aux button. It's actually right side up facing backwards as of now.

How have you been controlling the volume?
Do you have the headunit set at a medium-to-high setting and control the pc's output?

Almost the opposite actually, the way the steering wheel controls work I still have control of the volume and the mute option. I just max the PC volume and use those at the moment. It works well and will get me by until more money comes along .

Ok, I recently got the car back out and I've got more information about the aux issue. The problem seems to rarely happen once the temperature outside gets warm enough.

One particular instance that stands out was last night I had the car running for about 5 minutes. It started up and stayed on aux like it was suppose to. I dropped someone off and waited for them to come back so I shut the car of and let the music play. When they came back I started up the car and at this point the car reverted back to AM/FM. This really confuses me, but it almost seems like the radio isn't getting power for a split second when I turn on the car.

It may still be a battery issue but I really don't want to spend the money to find out unless it's absolutely neccasary .

A weak battery can cause wierd problems. I had no trouble starting or any other symptoms of a bad battery but my auto-dimming rear view mirror would sometimes work and sometimes not. You can tell because there's a little green light on the mirror - sometimes it would be on when I started the car and sometimes it wouldn't be on. After I replaced the battery the problem went away and I haven't seen it since. You can get your battery load-tested for free at several auto parts stores like AutoZone or Advance Auto.
