Here is an updated answer to that question from a tech at eD (basically I asked how much minimum space would you recommend be given, and what is the worst case scenario occurred and you have complete blockage):

"...you'd want at least .25" behind the speaker. Plugging it entirely can create some odd back pressure that would definitely be noticeable in a ported box, and may actually end up being audible in a sealed enclosure as well."

---

When I was testing out spacers, I noticed that about .2" was enough to give it enough space from the back wall (I listed .25 instead because that's more common), and .5" was the furthest you could go out and have it still fit in the rear sail panels nicely. So if you go with anywhere from a .45" spacer to a .5" spacer - it appears you would be fine with the amount of space that would leave behind the speaker.

If you don't rewire then components are preferable because you already have the separate channels to connect them. Also, I prefer the angled position of the door tweeters over the lower positioning in the coax setup (personal preference).

Hey, I'm always up for an interesting discussion that doesn't degenerate into flames and name calling. That's why I frequent this forum - I enjoy the exchange of information and viewpoints.

I read a lot of post in this stereo & electronics section and then PMed WhiteBird00 with some questions and he has answered most of what I asked in this paritcular thread. He knows his stuff.. .. Upon his recommendation I replaced my head unit and used some infinity coax in the front doors ..and left the stock subs and rear speakers hooked up and used the factory amp with very good results..I just replaced my sail panel subs with some after market subs and it sounds even better...the head unit is the reason so many factory speakers are blown ... I love the way that my car sounds now ... when it warms up I'll be able to take off the T tops and turn it up loud enough to hear it without blowing speakers as I did in the past...I gotta give Mr WhiteBird00 his props ...this is a great place to get help and to gain knowledge on many subjects..

Just curious - what make/model did you end up going with?

He definitely set me straight on the difference between Firebird/Camaro setups!

I used CDT CL-6E 6.5 mid subs ... a guy that lives near me had an extra set of them and I bought them from him ... his system was a lot more upscale than mine..He is running dual JL audio 10 in subs and the CDT speakers in his car ..his sounds very nice but I like the way that my car sounds too .. I listen to classic rock and blues and it works great for me ... I used the factory wiring and monsoon amp .. I thought that I had had "a plan" but after dicussing it with WhiteBird00 he steered me in the right direction and I spent a lot less money and it took a lot less work to get the car to sound the way that I wanted ... I am a happy guy now..

Would you mind posting the contents of whitebirds PM's to you? I'm sure that such knowledge would help all those who are curious about upgrading their stereo as I obviously am.

I have deleted tose PMs already. But Most of what I asked him is included in his posts in this thread. Basicly the root of all evil is the monsoon head unit...just replacing it will make a big improvment and will will keep you from blowing speakers all the time..I installed a Poineer head unit and I chose to use some aftermarket coax door speakers and replaced the sail panel midsubs with aftermarket midsubs and left it all hooked up to the factory amp and wiring..for me it turned out to be just what I wanted and I do not have a ton of money tied up in it..I listen to classic rock and blues and for my old ears it sounds great.. I can crank it up and rock without replacing speakers every time I want to cruise with the T tops off ..

WihitBird00 is a great guy and has answered a lot of questions for me..he is a very knowledgeable person when it comes to the monsoon systems in these F body's and in car stereo applications..I would not want to speak for him but from his demeanor on this forum I would guess that he would be happy to help anyone who asks him. He did not know me from Adam but by reading a lot of his posts I figured out that he knew what he was talking about. So I just PM him some questions about "my plan" and some components that I had already purchased. He gave me some good advise which I took and sold some of the things that I had bought and did my stereo upgrade as he recommended (his plan) I saved some money and I could not be any happier with the results..

Element could you please post some brands that might carry models that could substitute for the eDs? I'll admit I know close to nothing besides REALLY high end stuff, and whatever wouldn't be found at your typical Crutchfield or SonicElectronix.
Velodyne springs to mind, and I believe Peerless and Vifa also probably make drivers for this sort of situation.

As far as name-brand retail stuff, I don't have a clue. Haven't used any of that in any of my systems (with the exception of an Alpine deck) in years.

I know you didn't mean to say there was "only" one driver to use as a solution, I've just noticed over the course of a few forum audio sections that people tend to get hung up on a certain brand - and usually it's the poster stuck on a specific brand, and basically make threads to try and get support for their decisions. I remember one forum where the answer to life was Audiobahn

haha - alright, thanks man. For this being an LS1 site rather than audio-dedicated - I'm very happy to see the information and people here compared to your typical car forums... I should probably familiarize myself with audio-dedicated forums more...but the 2 I have tried wont let me register because every username I choose apparently has been taken (not possible obviously....wtf).
