Default help with tape to cd deck upgrade

I've got a '98 z28 with the stock tape deck, stock sound sytem......i'm gonna long haul it on the power tour this year, so i figure maybe i'll want something to listen to other than the dual cutouts....maybe.....

so what's the simplest way to put a cd player in? can i just find an old stock 1.5 din player from another f-body and swap it in, or is there more to it? what all do i need to do? i don't need it to bump, i just want it to play cds

much thanks in advance

The 1998 - 2002 f-body Monsoon headunits are interchangeable. I'd recommend a 2001-2002 unit because they can handle more than one auxiliary device. Also, the 1998-1999 CD headunit cannot control the stock CD Changer (some late 99 CD headunits can).

oh, that's cool.....so my 98 tape deck should be a monsoon? pardon my ignorance, i'm not much of a stereo literate person......for some reason i thought there was going to be a difference between different sound sytem levels that was going to make it difficult to just swap in a stock cd player...but i can just plug a 98+ f-body cd player right in, eh?

Not neccessarily. Its the amp and speakers that make it a Monsoon. The headunits should be the same, but Im not completely posistive though. Maybe Whitebird00 can jump in.

Correct both CD HU's are the same, only difference is one says Monsoon on the display. With that being said, you can always add a 12-Disc changer to the cassette HU and still enjoy your CD's. Your 98 is already prewired for the changer, thats what I did on my 98-SS.

If you just want a CD HU then pick one up that is not a Monsoon, it will be cheaper. Just get a Delco am/fm/cd player. Make sure it looks like the Cass unit you already have. 2-warnings, make sure the CD player is working correctly(as many are not working, but the radio is), and make sure the display lights up correctly aswell as the Night lights(many have blown bulbs, a bit of hassle to get changed as they are welded in). That should do it. Install is as easy as taking yours out and replacing it with the CD HU.

Check your door for the UZ7 option code.

Sorry, "old fashioned" isn't the word. You can pick up a factory 12-disc CD changer for around $100 either in the for sale section here or on ebay. It plugs right in to the harness that's already installed in your car and is controlled by the factory cassette head unit you already have. You get the best of both worlds - play multiple CDs and still have a tape player that allows easy integration of other sound sources such as MP3 players or satellite radio.

Given the choice of replacing the head unit or adding the changer for about the same money, it should be a no-brainer to go with the changer.
