hoping it'll make 475 wheel from this junkyard dog. mostly free and cheap stuff in it. 0965 ls1 cam. Gen 3 block and crank, Gen 4 4.8 pistons on gen 4 rods to get a decent CR out of the big chamber early 806 heads. Little tiny bit of hoggin on those, nothing crazy. Just something to keep me busy while I was cooped up last winter. Ebay studs. Cts-V pan. Ready to go minus PAC 1218's HMU if you have some to get rid of.

cut down and drilled out the metric CV rod end. tigged on two grade 8 nuts. huge deep bevel gave me nearly full depth penetration in one pass. not my best work, but I need to be able to push the truck around and stuff.

The plate boxing the frame and the angle brace welded to the bushing are from the shipping mounts. I learned a couple things here. #1 This stuff welds best with 316 rod and #2 I really suck at tigging out of position.

These things are not medieval helmets. Although they probably weigh as much. They are the shipping mounts for the maybach diesels we use in some of the boats at work. Again the actual alloy is a mystery but they are harder than hell to drill or cut. They throw and almost white spark when grinding. The holes were filled with grade 8.8 and 10.9 metric hardware so my boss sent those home with me too.

I kinda eyeballed how much material I'd have to remove to clear the bushing and box the frame in that area to bolt my bushing to. I marked it off and then set a ripping fence for the plasma cutter. I forgot to take an after pic so just imagine a semi straight line with a bunch of dross you have to grind off. Still quicker than a 4.5" deathwheel (cut off disc)

so after a couple hours of measuring and remeasuring I decided I had the crossmember in there pretty dang square. about a 16th. The frame itself was the squarest GM frame I've ever seen 1/32 in the front end. I think they really improved their build quality over the 60-66 trucks I am used to messing with. I've seen clean low mile 60's trucks off a half inch. You can see my little tabs tacked on in this pic. Also drilled the frame for the crossmember bolts and tacked the nuts for ease of removal

laying them out on some 1/4" mystery steel I found in the trunk of the CV I spotted in the pick n pull hoping it was a civilian model so I could grab the springs. No luck on the springs, but these came in handy. Cut em out on my harbor fright bandsaw.

Many CV swappers box the frame rails and use the upper frame locator then thru bolt it. I didn't see any reason for this on this truck. It'll weigh around 1000lbs less than a CV and I certainly won't be blasting traffic medians at 50mph in pursuit of bad guys. I decided on something a bit simpler. I'd make a bracket to grab the upper coil brace and run it to the frame. Here's some simple cardboard mock-ups

i think this is about a 5" drop. that boat trailer jack on the front? lol, i needed a way to roll the truck outside to pressure wash the frame and this was the cheapest thing I could come up with. I didnt wanna ruin my skateboard haha.

next I needed a centerline to match the wheelbase to go off of so i hung a plumb bob and marked the frame. there's some good blueprints for 73-87's out there but I just wanted a reference line for a sanity check.

I used a '79 mustang manual rack which is a the right width, but its offset while the CV rack is on center. This required moving the mounting studs towards the driver's side. Drill overside, insert and plug weld over it.

welding this stuff was kinda fun. it was so oil impregnated (even after several pressure wash, degrease, mag wheel cleaner cycles) that I'd have to flick the pepper out of the puddle with my filler rod as I was welding. Came out ok though I think.

I decided to try the crown vic swap. they're cheap and plentiful. Here's it jigged up for welding after chopping 5" out of the center.

i used panel mount epoxy and tek screws on the pans and butt welded the inner and outer rockers. if you are planning some panel replacement do yourself a favor and buy a spool of esab easy-grind wire. seriously. do it.

ahp 200x and a cut50f. the tig needed a torch upgrade really bad. used a small ck that uses 2 series consumables, air cooled, gas lens kit made all the difference. its actually been great, very nice stable arc and the HF start is perfect. i dont auto pulse much but if i did id be bummed that it doesnt pulse very fast or very slow. the plasma is ok. certainly nothing amazing. it cut metal and doesnt take up much space.

harbor fright bandsaw on a swag offroad v1 stand does a lot of the cutting. buy the replacement policy. you'll need it. actually, just buy the milwaukee…the HF one is ungodly loud

the front main and rod journal for cylinders 1 & 2. This is what happens when you have coolant in your oil, and you let it ride. Your bearings are turned to mush and it sticks to the journal. Hopefully I can clean the bearing material off with some emery cloth. This motor isn't really worth a turn and polish. Probably cheaper to get a runnable 24x crank than to throw money at this one.
