Just purchased a Gear Vendors overdrive unit
Anyone have one? I'm looking foward to be able to drive at higher speeds on the highway and supposedly it can be very usefull at the tack as well, keeping your rpms up by effectively giving you gears in between your gears and an extra gear up top if you run out, might be good for a little nitrous.

I have one on my one ton diesel F350. It is one of the best investments I've ever made. With 4:10 rear gears I can cruise a 80mph at 1950 rpms in double overdrive.

It eats 1hp per 400. So at the most I'll loose 2hp.
The bad thing is the weight, the unit weighs about 52lbs but you're replacing the tailshaft and cutting some driveshaft off, you're left with about a 35lb gain when it's all said and done. I think it's worth it though and it's supposed to help you ET better no the weight should be a non issue. We'll see.

wow, that is extremely efficient. i am impressed. the weight stinks but hey, obviously, if you want to drive the car more on the street, you have to make compromises somewhere. awesome stuff.
looking forward to some results. what kind of reduction in highway rpm are we talking about? i am at 3500 rpms at 70 mph on my current combo.

The guy at Gear Vendors told me I should drop 800 rpms in the overdrive setting on the highway.
I'm currently at 28-2900 rpms at 60 mph, I'm probably at 32-3300ish at 70 mph.
If I can get 70mph at 2500 rpms I'll do a backflip, hehe
At 2500rpms I can highway cruise on pump gas (maybe a little octane boost added) and enjoy the car more on further trips!!
Plus with my 8" N/A converter, the extra rpms from the OD on a moderate shot of nitrous should allow me to keep the converter the way it sits and leave me enough rpms to finish the run.
My goal now is to keep running my mid9 sec N/A times and just "sneak" into the 8's on a 150 shot. How cool would that be? Need about 850-900 horse at 3300lbs to get in the 8's if everything is working right so I'm really hoping when I get this combo together it will get me there, I'll "just" be making the hp needed so we'll see.

$2600
The standard unit holds 1200 hp and there is a free upgrade (some clips, fasteners) that will hold 1500 hp and more, that's the one I got, not that I need it. My th350 won't hold much more than it already does. If you ever decide to switch to a th400 or a glide they can transfer your unit to work with any trans. (cost like $500 to switch it).

A built 4L80E (4L85E) made to handle 1000hp (the most hp I've seen one built for) is 8k.
That would be with an 11 inch converter which would absolutely KILL the car down low.
Plus you would have to clearance the tunnel, try and find a scattershield to fit it and not to mention all the extra weight over a th350 or 400 even with the GV on it.
Even new a good th350 or 400 built by a good company like Rossler hovers just north of 2k and you can buy a used one for around or just north of 1k so it's a no brainer IMO.
Not a dumb question, I had already looked into it so I had the same one.

No ****? The one's I saw were much more $$$$$$$$
My buddy Mike has one in his C5 and he makes around 1000hp, maybe more, not totally w/o issues but at 1000+hp that's no surprise.
If anyone can make it work its MM.

Did you ask Gear Vendors if that would actually fit in your car? There was a guy on another board 6-7 years ago that tried to put one in his 3rd gen and gave up. EXTENSIVE modifications necessary to the floorpan. He tried the BFH mod, and nearly destroyed the pan. Still didn't fit. I believe he ended up cutting out the pan and welded in a new pan, but the center console no longer fit and he had to fabricate new seat brackets. When he went to fully assemble the rest of the car he found out about the torque arm issue and scrapped the whole project.

I asked the guy specifically and he said it would fit with no tunnel monifications.
Stock torque arm location will not work but mine is long since relocated. No mods to the trans crossmember either.

the price I saw was for the unit. what size converter? simple th350 or 400 is still going to be lighter, easier to install and more reliable with more of a choice for converters no?
Not saying a 4L80 stuffed into an f body isn't cool as ****, just not the way I wanted to go.
I'm still interested in what your friend payed for the L80, try and find out.
