Best Cam for my 402 stroker Daily Driver
I have a 402 forged lq9 stroker motor in my 98 trans am. I have it apart for a refresh and found out the previous owner didnt tell me the correct specs for the cam He told me it was a 236/236 .595 .598 on 112 but after tear down i see that its a reverse split (SLP 51013) 234/228 .576 .571 on 112. From research i see this is a cam ppl put in stock intake and head cars but NOT for fully built 402 stroker with patriot stage II ls6 heads and weiand ls6 intake which my car has. This little find kind of upset me greatly and I think it is greatly holding back my cars potential. Any advice?
My specs:
402 stroker LQ9 (4'' Stroke)(eagle crank and rods, ROSS race pistons, 11.5 Compression)
Weiand aluminum ls6 intake
Patriot Stage II ls6 Heads
Patriot Dual Springs
1.8 Yella Terra Rockers
Car has a 4000 vig stall, built 4l60e, 3.73 gears.
I drive this car every day and just want a good powerful yet very streetable cam for the car. Any suggestions? Also what kind of RWHP should this be putting down? Iwas thinking about the TSP torquer v2 on a 112 as I love a choppy idle 112 has to offer I was thinking something in the 230-240 range with around .600-.610 lift on a 112...Any advice greatly appreciated!!

jwill,
I put a SLP cam in my 402 with L92 heads and for track duty it was awesome but for daily driving it was terrible. After about a year of research and going back and forth with my tuner we both finally decided to go with a Stage II Livernois cam. I opted for a 224/236 split with .612 lift on 117.5 LSA. This required a spring upgrade but I couldn't be happier with the results. Keep in mind these numbers are for a 6 spd Y-body programmed for speed density with 1 7/8 Kooks headers and a Kooks 3" x-pipe with no cats.

This is a link where cams were discussed for a 427 and I stuck my dyno graph in to show a comparison of the SLP cam (symmetrical) versus the Livernois cam (Split). Granted the Livernois cam has more lift and better LSA. My car still rumbles at idle and gets lots of thumbs up but what I love is the ability to pull the RPM all the way down to about 700 with no issues will cruising. This was not the case with the SLP cam as anything below 1500 would cause surging and bucking.
Not sure what the 117.5 LSA would do for an auto but with that stall I don't see any issues. Others may have a better opinion.

Since you have ls6 heads,I have used all the LG Motorsport g5x cams. A 402ci can take more cam and drive nicer then a 346 ls1. If you want a cam to drive nice as a daily a g5x1 cam will be nice. it's a 228/232 590 ish lift and in my car drove close to a stock cam,but made more power and had a thump to the idle. If you want a lil more then the x2 cam a 232/236( i think) and it again drove real nice but made even more power. For the best performance the g5x3 236/244 595 609ish cam pulled the hardest to 6,600rpm's,sounded great and still drove very well in my car. The x4 cam was bigger, but only a 5hp gain on the dyno and no improvement in e.t for a cam stressing the valve springs. LG Motorsports don't give out cam specs so i think i'm on or close to the specs. You can get a 112 or 114lob. All the cams performed great and with a tune drove nice as well,i could of daily drove any of them after a tune. On the x3 cam i made 458hp on a mustang dyno and 463hp 414tq on the x4 cam in a ls1 346ci and i ran 11.1 1/4mi N/A in a 3,600lbs car.

Any thoughts on a MS4? I know for a 346 that would be way too radical for the street, but in a 402ci it might be a decent cam for a daily. I think I will be running around 11.0-11.6 compression, 1.8 yella terras, and I have dual springs but I am unsure of their lift rating and cannot find any numbers or info on the springs themselves.

i wound up getting a 235/248 with .651/.629 on a 113 from Ed @ FTI. Sounds like we had similar goals in mind with totally different cams... interested to see how they each come out

which heads are you running? That grind seems to favor L92/LS3 style heads with the 15.5 degrees of overlap @ 0.050" and duration heavily favoring the exhaust, which is really restricted with those heads.

Its going to be a completely different car. As soon as I get some free time I will start a build thread. I dropped the K member, Freshening up the trans and motor, cleaning the car all up, did the wire mod and the fuse box relocation, painted the engine bay, and will be painting or polished everything on the motor

It should run hard. The MS4 in my 408 with LS6 intake and stock 799 heads made 375 lb-ft. of torque to the tire @ 2500 RPMs, reaches peak of 475 lb-ft. @ around 4000 RPMs and holds pretty steady through 5000 and then tapers off slowly.
I'm not too familiar with that intake, how well does it flow over the stock LS6 piece?

i have a 402 patriot stage 3 heads, 10.6c/r, pacesetter headers and cam 236-242 ,112 lobe sep. and about .650 lift with my cran 1.85 alum adj. rockers, ls6 intake. made 457rwhp- 442 tq, but tuner has tried everything he can, even went speed density tune and can't get ride of the surging and bucking under 2000rpm, i think it could be cam, i was also looking for cam( i love the deep rough idle also)

the MS4 in my 408 with stock 799s, mid length headers, LS6 intake is a 239/242 0.649/0.609 on 111 and has 0 issues. Something is up with your setup/tune. Why are you using 1.85 rockers?
