853 vs. 241 heads
If someone else has already made a thread like this I apologize, I didn't see it when I did my search. What is the difference in these two heads? I'm curious cause I keep seeing the 853 heads but not a whole lot of the 241s...
Thanks in advance,
Brandon

I've seen the design models (cad models) for both the 853 and the 241...I've even overlayed one over the other.
The PRIMARY design differences, were for different casting methods. The 853's I'm pretty sure are sand castings, and the 241's are die castings. There are also some structural differences, such as gusseting around the rocker bolt areas.
The ports and chambers, while not identical, are very very very close together, and any flow differences would be very very very minor.
The other difference, is as far as I know, the 853's were only used in 1999 and 2000, the 241's were introduced at some point during the 2000 model year (my 2000 has them, as do many others), and were used through 2004 on the LS1 in the Vette and GTO.
As King Nothing said though, if you haven't bought either set of heads yet...take a look around for 243's, or 799's. The 243's are the original LS6 casting, which also with heavier valves became the LS2 casting, and the 799 is just a newer casting of the same design used on LOTS of engines...they both outperform the 853 and 241 quite a bit.

The deal is there is a guy around my area selling a LS1 short block with low miles with the 853 heads on it...I was thinking have the heads ported and polished and milled a bit and they would be good to go. But I wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to make a huge mistake by picking up that combo. FYI the plan is LS1 block, port/polished and .020 milled heads. 228/230 588/591 112 LSA cam, long tube headers, BBK SSI intake, 3000 stall, 4.10 gears

I do not know if I would put that much money into 853/241s. Like I say a good combo can perform regardless but really you will out grow the 853/241s with in your first year and you will have to do it all over again with the 243s/799. My point being cut out the middle man and go with the 243s/799 like previously stated and you will have so much room to grow you'll probably get bored before you can reach the full potential of the 243s/799.

I have found 243s pretty cheap,I just bought a bare set for 300, and in the past have got complete for 370 ,420, look at craigs list ,everyone on tech knows what they have, a lot of times people on craigs list don't really know what they have,I'm. About to buy a complete lq9 short block for under 500.the guy has no clue what he has.

I don't know if you have the parts listed above or not,but if you don't I would just go with a ls6 intake,I wouldn't spend the money for a new bbk, imho if I had to pick between the bbk and ls6,I'm taking the ls6, and you can get them for 300-320.fast are the best but they cost.i. don't remeber how much the bbk is but I'm sure its more than 300
