Default Triangular clips on rear deck - tie downs?

Are the triangular clips in the carpet on the rear deck just tie downs? I have never used them or heard anyone mention them. Are they just into sheet metal and serve no other purpose? I just want to make sure I can take them out without something dropping on the other side of the screws holding them down.

Is that true? Cause my former Formula (R.I.P.) didn't have them and my SS does. What gives?!?!? Some people have them and some people don't.

Im thinking of connecting my rear straps from my 5 point harness to them. Anybody else do this? Will it work and is it safe?

I believe they were first mandated in 1999 or 2000. My '00 'bird has them.

Plug the hole if you take them out, I think it does to open air... Can't remember for sure though...

So it hasn't been confirmed.....do I need to plug holes, will some backing nut fall to the ground....anyone?

I assume there must be some substance to the connection if it is related to child safety.
