Default 4L80e - Trans cooler fittings...seals?

Hey guys, new to these transmissions and I've got a 4L80e going in my swap vehicle.

I bought some 6an trans cooler adapters and retaining clips from a local stealership. I asked the parts guy if there are any seals/o-rings needed for these fittings. He said no, but I need some verification before I go and throw a bunch of ATF on the ground...

In short, trans cooler fittings for 4L80e, o-rings or seals needed other than retaining clips?

Thanks!

What year model 4L80E do you have? If yours is a 1991-1996, all you need are the 1/4" pipe (6) AN fittings and teflon pipe thread sealant.
If yours is 1997-up, you won't be able to use the AN fitting for the rear cooler unless you can find someone who installs the lube extension in the fitting. This fitting intersects through a seal in the center support for the lube circuit.

not sure what kind of adapters you have, if they replace the orig lines that are held in with "clip" fittings, then they would prob use o-rings-i would like to see a pic-the screw in adapters from the factory are 1/4-18 STRAIGHT fittings with o-rings, dont let someone tell you to use reg npt threaded fittings unless you want to crack your housing
ATI Perf Prods has the AN fittings w/washers that will screw in the trans,
but if you have a rear return fitting, then get a steel fitting and weld it to the
orig adapter
heres a pic of the ATI adapter

Sorry for not being clear. The transmission is a 2004 model. The adapters are from Pure Choice Motorsports.

now that is cool-havent seen those b4-if you look inside the fitting that screws into the trans, there should be an internal o-ring, that will seal your fitting-make sure its there and you should be ok-there should also be a seal on the outside of the fitting where it meets the trans case
i orig welded a steel AN fitting onto the trans fitting, but when i put the hose end on, it hit the floor, so i screwed the trans fitting on, marked where it stopped, then welded a 90 deg fitting on pointed toward the front
gonna order a couple of those, thanks

Yes, the factory fittings are 1/4-18 straight, but NPT works fine unless you crank it down really hard. I am using NPT with no issues, and I know some trans shops (sponsors here) use NPT as well with 0 issues. You actually are more likely to crack the older style case, because the angle of the fittings going downwards gives you less case strength.

+1 Thanks for the info, a little off topic but my girlfriend just picked up a 2000 3/4 ton silverado with a 6.0 and 4l80e. I just noticed the one transmission cooler line going to the radiator was leaking. So now im in the process of pulling the stock lines and running AN lines w/ an external trans cooler

I just got off the phone with them and the fitting works for both 4L60E and 4L80E lines. I just ordered two.

Thanks for the tip runpasthefence ! I've been looking for a way to fix my return line on my 4L80E to use the factory fitting that lubes past the internal seal.

Cheers !
