Default Best tranny?

I am new to this site and was looking for a little info. on a tranny for my 99 Trans Am. I am looking for something that will hold up. Already gone through the 4L60E and it has a TH350 in it now but not working properly. I think that it was not built properly. Looking to possibly go with a TH400 but not sure if it will still be streetable. I run at the track on weekends but also still want it to be a street car. Here is a list of what I am working with.

You might want to try Rossler. Rossler does the 4l60e's for Lingenfelter LS1 427 twin turbo vettes. His tranny's are very pricey though.

Well, youre TH350 and a TH400 are very similiar. The TH400 is basically just a heavier duty/beafier trans. Neither is lockup or has overdrive...

Is your 350 full manual? If so...a 400 should be about the same...

Yes the TH350 is full manual and I realize that the TH400 is going to be the same ratio. I just want something to stay with me, so I was thinking the TH400 with a trans brake.

Trans Brake really puts some strain on the trans when released...
But if it's well built, that doesnt matter- just many rebuilders use a few different/better components in trans brake applications (that dont really matter in a normal application).

TH400 and 4L80E are pretty near the same size/weight
and same need for sledgehammer bodywork in the tunnel,
right? Might want to get the OD and adapt it up so the
PCM can run it? A crate GM 4L80E might (?) even have
a warranty, and I think there are a couple of places that
have adapt-'em-up wiring kits. Something to look into,
if you're dead set on beefy.

Going with the TH400 tranny, now I need a good shifter. Any suggestions or pics of shifter installed?

l think if you can get your 400 built with a TH375 output shaft your yoke will fit, but nothing is the same length as the 4L60. you might call eugene at 818 838 7154 l know he has installed 400's in your type car. l get nothing for this advise jk

Hurst Quarter Stick.

Also- getting the trans with a reverse pattern valve body (where you pull back to shift) is nice, need to make sure your shifter matches this.

Actually, the TH400 is lighter than a 4L60E and much lighter & smaller than a 4L80E. No banging required, it's actually not a hard conversion, just need to make sure you talk to someone who has done it and get the right parts (nothing complicated- just so you don't half-*** it). I'm sure TCI can hook you up flexplate and converter wise.

As for the actual trans, I've heard good things about this shop:
http://www.ckperformance.com/select.html

Also heard great things about FLP, TCI, Hughes, and ATI.
